Or more like "Mary, the medical experiment".
All my expectations of my internship time at Torchwood got destroyed after I was introduced to Owen Harper.
Jack had told me that I need to do a routine medical examination. So he brought me to Owen who got fascinated. He analysed my blood. And after he realized some strange anomaly he decided to study me like I was a medical experiment. Ianto was with me all the time.
"This is amazing!"
Owen was sitting in front of his computer screen and couldn't believe what he was just looking at.
"This stuff can revolutionize everything! Oh, my god!" He was grinning brightly. But I shook my head.
"No. It won't. This" I pointed at the screen angrily. "Is not supposed to exist!"
Ianto grinned while Owen was just about to freak out.
"What the hell does that mean?"
I tried to find a good explanation. But I failed.
"You are about to discover these things before their time. I won't let you do this because this knowledge is meant for the people decades from now."
Owen nodded but his gaze told me he wanted to kill me.
"I can win a Nobel prize with this!"he protested.
I shook my head. "No, you can't. Not meant to happen these days, sorry."
Owen looked at Ianto and expected something that would defend his opinion. But Ianto only said: "a lot of things in Torchwood can revolutionize the world."
I nodded and hoped they would let me go. But Owen stopped me.
"Oh, wait! I won't let you go!"
A bit disappointed, I let out a sigh.
"I'm just a teenage girl. What could I possibly have that interests you?"
He looked at me like I was absent for the past few hours and haven't seen the blood analysis.
"Are you kidding me? Bloody hell! I want DNA- tests, a full X-ray and a scan of your brain. And you will stay exactly where you are, young lady!"
Even though his scientific interest in me was very annoying I still liked him. And I knew Jack probably broke many laws to let me be here. As a Thank you I had to be very cooperative. So I sat down and prepared for a lot of questions.
"Oh, before you completely freak out... I have two hearts."
Ianto laughed while Owen couldn't believe my words.
"Two hearts? Two bloody hearts?!"
"Yes. But remember. Nothing of this is meant for this century."
Owen put on the stethoscope and listened to my heartbeat.
"What the hell do you mean with that?" he asked confused. I probably forgot to say that I was also a time traveller, not only an half- alien.
"She's a time traveller. Like father like daughter, I'd say." Explained Ianto and bid into his apple. Owen looked like his whole world was about to crack and break down.

My first day at Torchwood ended when I heard the mechanic whooshing of the Tardis engines. It was Dad. He wanted to pick me up. I was a bit disappointed that my day was over so fast.
"Hey!"
"I was your first day, sweetheart?"
I entered the Tardis only to see both of my parents inside the space ship. It was a bit unexpected.
"Hi. It was pretty nice."
Their smile made me suspicious. Both of them looked like they either wanted to give me the greatest surprise ever or planned to kill me and bury me on the dark side of the moon.
"What is it?" I asked.
Suddenly I heard the sound of Dad's sonic screwdriver. But then I saw that his sonic screwdriver was lying at the control board. So where was this sound coming from?
But then I realized.
"Oh no... You did not..."
His excited smile was the answer. Then he revealed a screwdriver. Its black and blue design was wonderful.
"It's for you." He grinned.
Mom gave me a tight hug. I was confused. My parents are normal parents and not the ones that decide to buy you everything you want for no reason. There had to be a reason.
"Is it my birthday?" I asked confused. "Or why do you give me this?"
Dad started the Tardis. The mechanic sound made it hard to understand what mom was telling me.
"Your principal called us today. He said your grades are so good that you can skip the current year! I am so proud of you!"
I never expected this. But it was fine. I always wanted a sonic screwdriver and this was a good way to get rid of all these stupid girls in my class. They brought me home.

I found Dad in the basement. It was something like his hobby to build things way more developed than in this time. And the basement was his laboratory. When I was five I slowly realized that it's not normal to have a family like this.
"Dad?"
He didn't turn around.
"Oh. Mary! Look what I made! A portal gun!" he proudly showed me the handy gun and insisted that I was the first person to try it out.
"Okay. And what exactly does it do?" I aimed at the wall but didn't plan to actually shoot.
Dad activated it.
"It shoots a portal at wherever you aim it. Then you shoot at a second wall and boom- You go through the one and get to the second."
I was very impressed.
"How did you build this?"
He looked at his desk.
"A toaster. The microwave. Actually, I destroyed the fan. And a salt shaker, for design. Oh, and I needed a bit of the wibbly- wobbly stuff. You know..."
We tried it out. And it worked perfectly. You place two portals wherever you need them and they're connected. You just have to walk through one of them.
"So, what do you say?"
He probably expected excitement. But I always found a mistake.
"One thing... Make the portals blue and orange."
We played a bit with the new gun and shocked mom almost to death. After that I finally remembered what I wanted to talk about. I thought about this talk since Ianto had told me.
"Dad, I need to talk to you."
We sat down in the basement.
"What is it?" He asked.
I took a deep breath.
"A few weeks ago, when I was on my way home for school I-"
Suddenly I saw something moving in the dark floor. Dad couldn't see it, it was right behind him.
"And- And then... I..."
Dad was getting suspicious. I needed to tell him the truth or find a good lie now!
"Mary!" Whispered someone. I was confused. Now I forgot what I wanted to say.
"Sorry. I- I'll tell you later. It's not that important."
I couldn't wait to see what was calling my name. Dad was probably very confused but that wasn't important for the moment.
"Who's there?" I mumbled after I was sure that Dad couldn't hear it.
Something moved in the dark, again. I decided to turn on the light.
The person who stood there- My Dad- seemed to be very nervous.
"I told you don't tell him! Why do you never listen! What's so- Oh, never mind! In the first place I came here to remind you! This has to be done."
He put on his serious face. I shook my head.
"Dad, I can't do this. I'm not the right person for this."
I almost cried. This was way too much for me. I couldn't handle it.
"Yes you are. Don't you ever think you are too bad for something. Because you can do everything if you believe it. You got a screwdriver and a Tardis. That's all you need. The most powerful things in the world. You can do it. And you will because from this point of view you have already done it."
He said these words with such passion that I believed every word.
"Tomorrow is your only chance."
"I understand."
