fifty three.

After the incident, we recollected ourselves and decided the next day we'd go out on a two day run in search for supplies and possible residents. We were now busy trudging through the woods after dark, the moon our only source of light as we neared the end of the first day. All we'd run into all day were biters, frustrating Aaron. We hadn't even found any trace of people possibly living out here either.

"There's more of them around here than there used to be," Aaron observed, huffing as he was close to giving up. "I don't even know if anyone—"

"Hey." Daryl interrupted Aaron, pointing to a small glimmer of light in the distance. "Someone must be out here." I felt myself become excited yet nervous at the possibility of talking to someone. Hell, we kept running into dead ends all day so I was happy to finally find what we actually came out here to do; this was our first sign of life we got. We started to walk quietly walked towards the light, careful not to make any quick moves that'd draw attention to us. The light suddenly disappeared when we reached a patch of trees.

"What the hell," I whispered to myself, confused. "Where did it go?"

"Means it's late, probably should head back," Daryl suddenly declared. "Wouldn't hurt to end the search right now and pick up again in the mornin'." Aaron and I agreed with him, the three of us turning around and heading back to Aaron's car which was where we designated our sleeping spots. Daryl climbed in the backseat with me close behind him, Aaron in the driver's seat just in case we needed to get the fuck outta here at any given moment. He locked the car for safety while I laid my head on Daryl's chest. He placed his hand on my back, rubbing it gently to help me fall asleep. I'd been asleep for a few hours when I woke up to someone whispering my name in my ear like they were trying to get me to wake up. I sat up and glanced over at Daryl groggily, my eyes still half-shut from being awoken. He was fast asleep, not having moved from the position he fell asleep in.

"Aften," the voice whispered again.

"What," I mumbled quietly, assuming it was Aaron and that he didn't wanna wake Daryl up. I was met with silence. "What is it," I tried again, carefully leaning forward to check on Aaron. Like Daryl, he was sleeping peacefully with his head against the window.

"Aften," the voice grumbled rather impatiently, Aaron's lips not moving. A chill ran down my spine as my eyes nervously scanned the car. Was there someone outside fucking with me?

"Who is that," I asked nervously, my heart beating faster. "Who's there?" A low chuckle rang out in response to my questions, like they were getting their rocks off from my fear and helplessness. Goosebumps instantly covered my body, my eyes growing wide. I sat back down in my seat, frantically scanning the dark woods through the window. I couldn't see anything. Daryl's hand gently touched my leg. I jumped, gasping as my head snapped to look at him. My chest lightly heaved up and down from the scare, my breathing shaky.
