CORRUPT ME

The library was my safe place

The library was my safe place.
Quiet, warm, full of the smell of books and the illusion that I actually had my life together.

I'd found a corner table near the big windows, laptop open, pretending to study — when in reality, I was replaying every second of that lecture.

Noted.
Just one word.
The way he said it, like he'd mentally pinned my words on a board somewhere and planned to dissect them later.

I exhaled loudly, earning a glare from the librarian.

The library smelled like old paper, dust, and too much discipline.
Exactly the kind of place Zade Rahim would haunt — quiet, rule-bound, suffocatingly neat.

I sat at the far table, pretending to read while my head replayed every smug word he'd said in class today. The way his voice had sliced through the room, calm but sharp — like he enjoyed watching me squirm under that gaze of his.

He wasn't just arrogant.
He was... infuriatingly composed.
Like the world existed to revolve around his logic and his rules.

I turned another page — too hard — and the corner tore.
"Perfect," I muttered.

Ahaan slid into the chair beside me, all easy charm and that grin that made it hard to stay mad for long.
"You look like you're plotting a homicide," he said, voice low.

"I am," I replied, not bothering to look up.

"Don't tell me it's my brother again."

"Who else?" I snapped, then sighed. "He treats everyone like chess pieces. Like he's ten moves ahead and we're all just—background noise."

Ahaan chuckled. "That's Zade for you. He's been like that forever."

"Well, maybe it's time someone teaches him he's not untouchable."

He gave me that look — the one halfway between amusement and warning. "Tara, I love your confidence, but Zade doesn't lose. He doesn't even argue. He just... dismantles people."

I smirked. "Then let's see what happens when someone fights back."

Ahaan groaned. "You're going to get yourself killed."

"Maybe," I said, shutting my book. "But at least I'll go down stylishly."

He laughed under his breath, shaking his head. "You're impossible."

Before I could reply, something changed in the air.
It was subtle — the kind of silence that folds over a room right before a storm.

And I didn't have to look up to know why.

Zade Rahim had just walked in.

It was ridiculous, really — how one man could fill a space without saying a word. His footsteps were soft, measured. His presence, heavy enough to make the entire room hold its breath.
