deserted. the flagstone stained with blood, strewn with broken wands. we stand, looking.
"where is everyone?" i ask
Ron walks ahead, toward the Great Hall. put his hands to the door...pushes them open.
Triage. the house tables have been pushed to the walls. the injured stand in groups, arms slung over one another's waiting to be treated by Madam Pomfrey. Filch's arm gushes blood. Flitwick's face is laced with gashes.
i stand in the doorway, taking it all in, as if some invisible force prevents me from going further, my face a mask as i view the dead laid in out in the middle of the hall, among them Remus and Tonks, their blood stained fingers clumsily intertwined. a heartbreaking sob draws my gaze to George, who kneels over a familiar boy, tears dripping from his eyes. Ginny, puffy-eyed and pale stands alongside a distraught Arthur and Molly. Ron goes to join his family. i run forward but stop dead in my tracks as i see who is laying on the ground.
Fred.
i engulf George, my best friend, into a hug, crying into his shoulder. he stands, still at first, but then wraps his arms around me, looking for comfort.
"its gonna be okay Georgie." i whisper to him
i feel him shake his head and his cries increases, wetting my shirt.
i look over at Harry who nods to the flask he's holding in his hand and to the doors.
i nod and look at Hermione. she walks over and engulfs George in a hug, freeing me. i kiss his forehead and give him a weak smile before turning and walking over to Harry, who's teary eyed.
Harry flings open the cabinet, snatches the Pensieve and slams it onto Dumbledore's old desk. he privies the cork from the flask with his teeth, tips the silvery-blue liquid into the basin. as the Pensieve twirls, Harry looks up and stares at me, giving me a slight nod. i nod back and we both dunk our heads into the Pensieve
darkness. frantic breathing. we stop. still. a baby's cry separates briefly from the breeze.
we circle about and locate a face hovering in the darkness. it is snape, chest rising and falling. stricken. concerned.
"Lily" Snape says
then..
"Lily! come out of there! now!" Petunia yells
Lily Evans emerges from some bushes, a flower upon her palm, opening and closing the petals like some bizarre oyster. her sister Petunia stares, then knocks the flower away.
"we're going home." Petunia says
Petunia takes Lily's arm, turns--and stops. a skinny boy, Snape, sits beneath a tree, watching them. without a word, he opens his hand and a leaf flutters from his palm like a butterfly, circling Lily once, then drifting up and away. Lily smiles, charmed. Petunia eyes the boy fearfully, then pulls Lily away. the boy watches them go.
Snape moves through a garden, his face like stone. he eyes the door ahead, hanging from its hinges. he peers up to the windows above. the baby's cry rises again. his eyes glitter. he moves on, disappears inside.
Lily and Snape lie together, staring up at the sky.
"she's jealous. because she's ordinary and your special." Snape says
