The afternoon halls of Bel-Air Academy hummed with the usual after-class energy. Students shuffled past in clusters, discussing homework, weekend plans, and what outfits they were wearing to Homecoming. Alexandria Wilkes stood at her locker, leaning casually against the beige metal as she texted Lisa.
Lex: Hurry up! French is gonna start without us again and Madame Lambert already gave me the side-eye this morning 💀
She chuckled at her own message before glancing up. Still no sign of her sister. As she began putting in her locker combination, she heard the smooth, familiar voice before she even saw him.
"Damn, baby, you are wearing that skirt."
She looked up to see Will sauntering toward her with a grin that could melt concrete. He came to a stop beside her, slipping an arm around her waist for just a moment as they both laughed.
"Oh, so that's the line of the day?" Alexandria teased, raising a brow while still turning the lock.
Will smirked. "What, you forgot the combination?"
She stuck her tongue out slightly in concentration, twisting the dial back and forth. "What's got you so cheesy, hmm? You smiling like you just won a Grammy."
"I can't be excited to see my girl?" he said, leaning in to kiss her softly.
She melted into the kiss, then swatted at him playfully as he sucked his teeth.
"Yeah, what's taking you so long?"
Alexandria giggled. "I'm sorry, I get nervous when you stare at me like that."
"Open the damn locker, girl."
"Okay, okay!" she laughed, finally twisting the final number—and with a satisfying click, the locker door burst open.
POP!
Balloons of gold and blue flew out, followed by a cloud of confetti that sparkled in the light. Alexandria squealed and jumped back, laughing in surprise.
"Oh! Ooh! What?" she gasped between giggles. "Oh my God, what is happening?!"
She looked down and saw Will getting on one knee right there in the middle of the hallway. Students nearby paused, then slowly started pulling out phones, murmuring in excited whispers.
"Alexandria VeraMae Wilkes," Will said, using her full name in that dramatic way he always did when he was being extra.
"VeraMae?!" she laughed, already covering her face in disbelief. "You really pulled out the government."
He grinned up at her. "Help me make all these other guys jealous and come to HoCo with me?"
She laughed, hand still over her mouth as her eyes welled with emotion. "Yes, obviously!" she said, practically bouncing on her toes. "You didn't have to do all this! But I love it!"
