"Beep... Beep... Beep..."
The beeps echoing from the heart rate monitor are the only sounds being made. My family sits there silently, just watching.
A split lip, stitches from the eyebrow to the cheekbone, bruises splattered along the jaw, and a tube down the throat pushing air into the lungs, and a fragile brunette painted in these traits.
Violet.
I guess she really was searching for "Never" tonight. That is until a drunk driver spun out on the wet road and hit her at 75 miles per hour. That would disrupt the search party of 1.
I should've gone with her, or told her to just stay with me. Better yet I should've said there would be no clubbing tonight. I mean, we're 17 why were we even drinking? Jesus. I should've... Done anything else.
So now I sit here with my mother and 11 year old brother wondering why. "Take a picture of her Dana, she'll want to see it when she wakes up." Carson says, unaware of the fact that she may not wake up.
"Alright bud."
I pull out my phone and snap a photo of Vi, who even when covered in injuries and tubes, looks beautiful.
"Beep... Beep.. Beeeeee-"
"Oh my Go- DOCTOR!" My mother shouts looking frantic. A doctor pushes my mother and sobbing brother out of the room. I just sit, staring at Violet as she flat-lines. I look at the heart rate monitor, willing it to go back to its monotonous beeps that signify her life. A nurse pulls me out of the room just as they shock her. But I see it, I see her body jump, almost expecting her to sit up and smile, but that was just the volts coursing through her.
The same volts that are coursing through my veins as I realize, Violet's gone. And she's not coming back.
I walk to the waiting room and sit across from my crying family and remember.

"Hey Dana! I'm having my birthday party next week, do you want to come?"
"Sure." I responded with a smile.
"Cool, I don't know who all is going to come, but since you're my best friend I need you there." Violet exaggerated.
"I'll be there, but are we going to the pool now or not?" I said with a smirk.
As we walked to the pool talking about random thing I looked at Violet and realized, 'I have a best friend.'
Laying out towels out on the chairs to tan, Violet looked at me and said "thank you."
I gave her a confused look to which she just responded with a smile.

We were 13, and I know now what I'd done that deserved thanks. Earlier that morning Violet's father had hit her, though she expertly covered it with concealer. Which is also why she wouldn't go in the deep end that day.
She thanked me for just being there I guess, for freeing her mind of the trauma, even if it was only for a few hours.
So now as the doctor walks toward me with a grim look in his eyes and utters the words "I'm sorry," I think about how she will never get to thank anyone again. Nor will she get to walk down the aisle, or move out of her dads house.
Well I guess technically, she did move out of her dads house. At least she's free. And maybe, she's found that never ending paradise.
But I'm going to find my own, the one she was looking for last night. The paradise that mattered so much to her.
"I'll find it Vi." I whisper looking at the white ceiling.
Part 2! Hope u like it! Any and all feedback is appreciated <3
