Anna opened her eyes.

She was starving, but they had no food.

She looked on her side and saw Enjolras wasn't there. The girl sent downstairs.

"Marius, where is Enjolras?" She asked.

"He went to see what is happening with the other barricade" he explained.

Anna sat next to Marius and waited quietly.

The sun rised, but was hidden behind the thick clouds. Anna was worried that they might get him - the police or the soldiers. She started eating her nails from the stress.

Suddenly Anna saw Enjolras jumping from the backside barricade.

She ran to him and hugged him tightly. He kissed her.

"I was worried they might catch you!" she said smiling. It always made her smile when he kissed her. So was for Enjolras.

But this time he smiled lightly. He squashed Anna's hand and turned to the other students.

"We're the only ones left." He said. Anna was hardly holding herself together. Her dreams - how she and Enjolras will live happily in the world of freedom, how she won't see the beggars at the streets no more, France's greatness.... They disappeared in a glimpse. "We're abandoned by those , who still live in fear... Let us not waste lives... Let all who wish to go from here...."

Nobody moved. No one would give up.

"Do you hear the people sing, singing the song of angry men? " Gavroche started to sing,

"It is the music of the people who will not be slaves again!" the students joined one by one. "When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums, there is a live about to start when tomorrow comes!"

Everyone felt their energy come back again and people surrounded Enjolras , asking for orders and telling him that they were short on ammunition.

Anna on the other hand saw how Gavroche slipped in the barricade. She ran in his direction.

"Gavroche! Gavroche, what are you doing?!" she whispered, but he didn't listen.

He was out of the barricade, singing one of his songs.

There was a shot. It didn't hit him, but was very close.

Everyone's eyes were on him. There was a big fuss around Coufeyrac, who cared about Gavroche, as if he was his brother, but Anna quickly pointed her gun at the man that did fire the first bullet.

A second shot hit Gavroche on the shoulder.

Anna stood as petrified. She was so scared for the boy , and yet - so blinded by his bravery.

The soldier shot again. Gavroche's still body fell on the ground.

Anna fired with her gun and the soldier fell dead with a bullet in his head.

Coufeyrac ran to take Gavroche's body and went back crying. Anna went to him, with her body shaking. Enjolras hugged her and she rigged her head in his collarbones, crying.

"You at the barricades listen to this!" their general shouted. "The people of Paris sleep in their beds. You have no chance! No chance at all. Why throw your lives away?"

"Let us die facing our foes." Enjolras said, holding Anna tighter. "Make them bleed while we can."

"Make them pay through the nose!" Comferberre continued.

"Make them pay for every man!" Coufeyrac and Anna added, sobbing.

"Let others rise to take our place until the Earth is free!" Enjolras finished.

"Canons!" the same man called.
