I felt like I was suffocating, and I was scared. It was hard to see through the thick smoke, and I could barely see the exit except for the green lights that lit the door. Quickly, I crouched down, to the ground where the smoke wasn't as thick and took a deep breath. Small golden embers covered most of the floor which caused me to accidentally Press the palm of my hand down on one. I let out a small yelp before I lifted up my hand and stared down at it. It was bright red, and bloody. Fear rushed through my mind while I called loudly for help.
"Is anybody here"?The flames grew bigger, as they spread to the ceiling. All of the lights had gone out but the room had stayed light due to all of the fire. I crawled towards the exit, in hope to find a way out but everything was blocked.
Suddenly I heard a loud crack, followed by the sight of hundreds of glowing sparks floating down from the ceiling. I froze, as I watched a large piece of wood break from the wall, falling and blocking the exit. The only exit.
"Somebody help me please"! I cried.I was choking now as the thick smoke filled my lungs. I could hardly breathe. I gasped for air, but my lungs refused to take it in.
"Somebody...please..."I was barely breathing, lying on the cold cement floor when I heard a loud snapping sound which caused me to jump. I could see a tall man walking as he avoided the wild flames across the large room. I tried to call him but my voice hardly made a sound.
"Zoe"! The voice called loudly.
Realizing that the large figure was Corey, I made an effort to call again.
"Corey" I said my voice weak.My voice was nothing more then a small wheeze. Corey walked closer to me but he still hadn't seen me.
"Zoe? Where are you"? He called loudly, his face filled with terror. While I stared at his flame lit face, I could see sweat forming on his forehead. My eyes stung with tears as I let out another wheezing scream.
"Corey I'm here" I choked.Corey's face quickly turned towards me and his eyes lit up.
"Zoe" he said quietly. He quickly rushed over to me, hopping over a fallen chair. He scooped me up in his arms like a baby. I pressed my face into his chest as he picked me up and wrapping his arms around me.
"It's okay" he whispered, "you're okay"He coughed loudly as he quickly made his way back towards the large break in the wall, that he had came in from.
"We're almost there Zo" he said, slightly out of breath. The smoke stung my eyes, as I refused to let them shut. I needed to see this. Suddenly, I heard a bang, followed by the sound of crackling fire. A piece of the ceiling had fallen, blocking our escape route with a wild wall of intense orange and red flames.
"Fuck" Corey cursed. In that moment, I had only one thought. We were going to die.
"Corey, I am so sorry" I choked, tears streamed down my cheeks.
Corey stared at me, he jaw clenched.
After about a second he gave me a small smile, letting me know that it was okay. His eyes filled with bravery and determination while he stared at the smoldering building.
"We're going to die Corey" I managed to say as I buried my face deeper into his chest. I could feel his heart beat loudly against me, as he wrapped his arms tighter around me."No were not" he whispered back, as he quickly ripped off his dark blue sweater and wrapped it tightly around me. I struggled to breath, as I coughed loudly. What was Corey doing? I thought to myself as he hugged me hard into his chest. My eyes tried to close but I forced them to stay open. Corey began to run towards the flaming wall of fire and jumped through it, as he let out a small grunt. Golden embers slapped me in the face as we flew through the tall angry flames.
In the distance I could hear the sound of ambulances and fire trucks, on their way. I really hoped that they would hurry, because I felt as if I was going to pass out at any second. As Corey landed, he placed me gently down in the soft green grass. I could see that he was burned, as he lay his head on the ground next to mine. He stared at me, his brown eyes examining mine and I reached for his hand and held it tight in mine.
"Corey" I said, my voice weak."Zoe, your going to be okay" he said, his voice hushed.
"I love you Corey" I whispered, as a tear rolled slowly down my cheek.
After a second Corey smiled weakly and his eyes filled with happiness.
"I love you too"A tear streamed down my cheek as I watched Corey's eyes flicker shut.
"Corey, don't leave me" I whisper.I used my final bit of energy to push myself closer to Corey. I was so worried about him, his face was red and burned, while some of his skin had bubbled slightly. I hadn't realized that I had been burned as well until I reached up to my face and felt the burned skin beneath my fingertips. The skin stung as I touched it causing me to cringe.
After a few minutes the ambulances arrived and a tall Man; who I assumed was a paramedic ran over to us and called over some more paramedics. I stared up at them, as I felt my eyes get heavy. Slowly I let my eyes close, as it was impossible to keep them open any longer. Everything went dark, as I fell out of consciousness, with the sound of crackling flames in my mind. Slowly the sounds died away and were replaced with the sound of silence.
