I woke up to the sound of a beeping heart monitor. My head was pounding, and I felt slightly nauseous. Slowly I turned my head, and saw Corey lying in the light blue hospital bed next to me. His left eye, that had been badly burned, was covered with a piece of wet cloth.
Corey's eyes flickered open, and he looked around the room confused.
"Corey" I said quietly.
Slowly he turned his head, and gave me a small smile.
"Hey Zoe" he replied as he cleared his throat.I felt my heart flutter as I smiled across to Corey. Suddenly a tall woman, with brunette hair stepped into the room. She clutched a clipboard tightly in her hands while she quietly approached Corey and I.
"Welcome back, how are we feeling"? she smiled.I pressed thumbs into my temples as I closed my eyes. My head felt like it had just been slammed into a wall about a thousand times.
"I feel pretty good actually" Corey replied.
The nurse nodded her head and turned her attention towards me.
"How are you feeling"? She asked, her tone soft.I groaned.
"My head is just...pounding"She nodded slightly as she took a step closer to me, and examined the monitor beside my bed.
"Your not getting enough oxygen in your blood. Perfectly normal, you just breathed in a lot of smoke. I'll just hook you up to the oxygen machine and you'll feel better" she said reassuringly as she hurried to the opposite side of the room. She grabbed a large, black and yellow oxygen tank from a large stack of them and hooked me up. She wrapped the two small tubes around my ears and placed the tiny bulbs into my nose. Cool air filled my lungs, and I took a deep breath in.
"Refreshing" I replied, realizing that I already felt a bit better. The nurse smiled and turned towards the door.
"Just call me if you need anything"As the nurse stepped out of the room I turned back towards Corey. His eyes met mine and my eyes filled with tears.
"Corey why would you risk your life for me, you could have died in there""I know that I risked my life Zoe, but I would have rather risked losing my life rather than losing you" he replied, his voice serious.
"Corey" I said quietly as a tear rolled out of my eye. The room was silent, except for the sound of mine and Corey's breathing.
"Corey, I'm so sorry. David was a huge mistake and I know now that the perfect guy for me was right here the whole time...could you ever forgive me"?Corey smiled slightly.
"Of course I forgive you Zoe, you did nothing wrong. I just should have told you how I felt about you earlier"I smiled and reached my hand across to Corey's bed, taking hold of his slightly burned hand.
"Does it hurt"?"A little bit, but I'll be okay"
I gave Corey a sympathetic look while I gently moved my thumb in a circular motion in Corey's palm, avoiding the burned areas. Corey's eyebrows furrowed as he stared across at me.
"What are you thinking about"? I laughed.
Corey blushed, and shook his head.
"Nothing really""That explains why your blushing" I replied sarcastically.
Corey smiled awkwardly before he spoke.
"I was just thinking, that if I wasn't hooked up to this machine right now, I would probably be kissing you..."I felt my face go hot and let out a laugh.
"I was thinking the same thing" I replied quietly.Corey smiled.
"I love you Zoe, and nothing can change that""I love you too Corey" I blushed.
A comfortable silence filled the room as Corey and I lay in silence. Suddenly I realized that Corey was staring at me, his face admiring.
"You are so beautiful" he smiled gently.
My heart fluttered wildly in my chest as I let out a small laugh.
"Yeah right, my chin looks like raw meat" I teased.Slowly Corey propped himself up against the back of his bed while he furrowed his eyebrows.
"Your still beautiful, that burn just makes you look like a badass" he replied raising his eyebrows.I let out a small laugh before I examined Corey's face. It wasn't too badly burned, besides his left eye and a bit of his neck.
I wondered what I looked like at the moment. The only reason that I had known that my chin was burned was because I had felt it when Corey had saved me from the fire. The hand that I had burned on the hot embers was wrapped in medical tape, while my other hand remained cuddled up in Corey's.Suddenly the nurse stepped back into the room, causing me to let go of Corey's hand, and pull it back over to my bed.
"So you guys should be out of here in about three days" she grinned.I nodded my head as she walked over to Corey. From the pocket of her white lab coat she pulled out a small plastic container of cream.
"This will help you heal" she said to Corey, as she gently lifted up the cold towel and dabbed the ointment onto his tender skin."Do I get some of that? I asked as I gestured towards the small container.
The nurse nodded her head.
"Yup, and we'll be giving you guys each a container of this to take home with you"When she finished applying the cream to Corey she walked over to me, and gently rubbed it on my chin.
"I'll be back to check on you guys soon" she smiled as she hurried out of the room."I can't wait until we get out of this place" Corey whispered to me.
"Me neither" I smiled.
The more that I thought about my feelings for Corey, the stronger they became. I honestly never knew that it was possible to love someone this much. A few months ago I only thought that love like this existed in movies, but now I know that I was wrong.
