~ Chapter Fourty ~

Ellie's P.O.V.

The day seemed brighter as I heard laughs echo throughout the woods. Everyone was sitting around the ashen campfire, smiles reaching their eyes. I rose and asked Carl why everyone was so happy, and then he pointed at the couple madly in love. Maggie and, if I remembered correctly, Glenn. They were laughing over a story involving eggs and a hat. I couldn't follow, so I just aimlessly held a grin on my face.

At the corner of my eyes were four new people. One, a woman, lady - I didn't know what age she was - that looked as though she had some Mexican blood in her. The other woman, lady, was wearing an army hat, and very revealing choices of clothing. I wanted to cover Carl's eyes just at the sight of her long legs.

The remaining men were quite the difference. One looked rough, confident, whilst the other shied away from eye contact.

"Who are those people?" I whispered to Carl, not wanting to introduce myself alone.

"Hey, Glenn! Ellie didn't get the introduction," Carl interrupted, making me want to smack him in the head because of his disrespect.

"Well, over there is Tara. I met her at the prison," the Asian guy pointed at the Mexican looking girl. "That is Rosita," the girl - wearing not too many pieces of clothing - waved at me with a smile. I returned a rather sheepish one. "The asshole is Abraham" the confident man nodded at my way. "And the last on is Eugene."

"Hi," I barely voiced out as their eyes turned to me.

"Just to remind you all, we are on a mission headed to Washington D.C. and I expect that we won't idle for long. We'll have to start moving when we have the chance," the confident one, Abraham, bellowed.

"You head to Washington, my group heads to New York," Maria informed him. She stopped sharpening her dagger, "but I have to ask. Why the mission?"

"Let's just say we have a very special package to deliver and our time is very limited."

Special package? My curiosity grew as I carefully studied them more. It didn't seem as if they had anything in hand, nothing in their packs that could cause them to be especially cautious. Shaking my head, I let it go. They must've had their own reasons for going places, and I didn't want to intrude on their privacy.

Besides, I had my own secrets too.

Since we had three cars for transport again, nineteen seats available, we were able to fit everyone in. We decided that we'd head South and find a stable place where we could all settle down before parting.

I wondered where Rick's head was at. Whether he wanted to go to New York or ride with Abraham to Washington. I couldn't even stomach the thought of Carl leaving my side. Just being in different cars made me paranoid that their car would randomly explode, and I'd be left with - literal - pieces.

"Ellie?" Maria inquired, one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding a map. "Where is your head at?"

"Huh? Oh, I was just thinking about their mission to Washington. Wonder what's happening over there," I partly lied.

"Yeah, they've been acting weird about it, doesn't seem like they're so cautious with anything," Joel worded out my thoughts.

"Although it seems to me like they're trying to protect the guy with a mullet. Maybe a scientist perhaps? Another immune? I wouldn't know," Maria sighed. My ears perked at the sign of another immune, and before I knew it, I was curious. More so than before.
