~ Chapter Fifty ~

Ellie's P.O.V.

Carl and I made up after the 'big reveal'. He became surprisingly lenient towards visiting me at the labs. After I told him that Joel and Maria already knew, he became furious that he was the last one to be told, but ultimately got better after repeating the fact that I was alive and had more time to spend with him. The amount of time? None of us knew. The scientists were still trying to mix fluids with my blood, but nothing seemed to work. Every week I gave out a vial of blood, but everyday they seemed more hopeless than before.

"And let your arm rest," the scientist, Luke, ordered. I obeyed and let him pull blood from my vein. "Okay, that's all for now."

Grabbing the bandaid from his gloved hand, I put it over the small bleeding dot. It was one out of five dots already.

"Uriah's got some news to tell you, hold on, I'll grab her in a sec."

Patiently, I sat on the edge of the hospital bed. The first person to walk through the door was not Uriah, it was Carl. A sweaty Carl that needed to catch his breath. "I came here as soon as my shift ended," he breathed.

"Nothing's happened yet, Uriah's on her way," I informed him, patting the space beside me.

By instinct, he sat and laid his head on my shoulder. "You know, even though it's been two days, I still don't know which person is which."

Chuckling, I explained, "Uriah is the main researcher. She's the one that deals with how to get the cure out of my system in the first place. Nico is her assistant, he's the one who reads the books to find out more about infections and what not. Luke is-"

"Oh, you don't have to remind me about him. I know him perfectly well," Carl sneered.

"He's not so bad," I defended. "You just got on his bad side when you crashed into him and made him stub his toe."

"And I would've stubbed it myself if I knew how much of an asshole he was."

"And the same perspective goes for me," Uriah's voice popped out. She chuckled lightly as she walked in.

"We could've saved an hour of research if you'd have looked at where you were going," Luke muttered in defense. Carl rolled his eyes in response.

"Hello Carl, how's Damien been treating you?" Uriah asked as she put on latex gloves.

"He's alright, tough when it comes to timing, but he gives me breaks when I need it," Carl replied, shrugging his shoulders.

"Good to hear my son's keeping things light for the next generation," Uriah commented. "Okay now to business."

Taking the stethoscope from the wall, she placed the metal part on my chest and I heaved for air, as usual. Checking my ears, she nodded in approval and told me I was in good condition.

"We've got some news," she started, taking a seat on the desk and looking down at her papers. "It seems that you've got a rare form of bone marrow disease, one that we haven't seen even before First Night. It targets your white blood cells, and so your antibodies are dramatically different from normal. Right now the closest thing we can name this is leukocytosis. You've got a really high number of white blood cells, which explains why your body can fight numerous infections day by day. We can't seem to figure out how your body can tolerate the abnormally high levels of leukocytes but that's not our main concern for now."

"So you figured out how she's immune?" Carl summarized.

"Yes, so that's one part done. The next is figuring out how to extract it from her body. And once we've done that, we send it to Asia to be mass produced."
