~ Chapter Three ~

Ellie's P.O.V.

The morning after, Joel woke me up.

"Let's go check on those people, they told us they'd be gone by today, right?" He asked. I nodded, and followed him to the room. He knocked three times, and there came no answer within ten seconds, but then the lock was undone afterwards. "Cozy in there? Let's not forget the part of the deal where you folks leave."

"Let us pack our things, we'll be out soon," the man stated slowly, bringing his hands to his chin. His eyes lightened a bit, compared to yesterday. Yesterday there were unruly dark circles making it clear that he hadn't slept in a while.

We waited until they were done packing, and made our way towards the door. Joel opened the main doors, but something was wrong. He closed it the instant he saw something.

"What is it Joel?" I asked, worried. His eyes were closed, forced shut as if he'd just seen something he didn't want to. I bit my lip end expected the worst.

Joel turned his back to the door, "There's a bunch of them outside. The second fence is still there to hold them back. Look mister, did you close the fence properly last night?"

"I did - tied a knot with the rope attached to the fence," Carl spoke up, alarmed.

"Shit, that isn't how we usually lock up the door," I could sense Joel getting angry. I knew it wasn't their fault; I was the one who should've went outside and tied it myself after I let them in. How forgetful of me. My inability to remember could've cost a life.

"It's fine. We'll just get rid of all of them, let these folks go and lock the fence the right way, alright? Nothing we can't handle Joel. We're fine," I calmed him down. He nodded, and looked at the people.

"We've got to kill these infected, and because it was your boy's fault they got in, you gotta help us kill them. No gun shots, we don't want more of them knowing where we are," Joel demanded.

"Nothing we haven't done before," the woman stated monotonously. Her numb bravery made me question whether the infected were more to fear, or her. We nodded our heads, informing him that we were ready. Joel opened the door and ran to the fence while all of us took out our knives and swords, killing as much infected as we could find.

I circled around the playground, making sure no other infected were there, so Lia wouldn't be jumped on. She always spent her time on the rusty slides - said it reminded her of her old school. I walked on the field, seeing three of them, then took out my bow and arrow. It wasn't the most accurate shot, but it still took one of them out. I ducked down, knowing that the other two would search where the arrow came from. Once a few minutes had passed, I drew another arrow and took down another of the infected.

Since I wanted to save my arrows, I grabbed the pocket knife and headed towards the last one. It started limping it's way toward me, moaning and biting. When it came close enough, I pushed it to the ground and put the knife right above its eyes. I stood up and started dragging the bodies to the fire pit, but once I was on the last one I got interrupted. I heard something I hadn't heard in a very long time. A gunshot.

"No! No! Shit!" I yelled, sprinting towards the sound. I had to make sure that person wouldn't shoot anymore.

I followed the sound of the gunshot and ended up at the back of the school. It was shady, and I could barely see the corner. Walking closer, I couldn't tell if the person was dead, or if they were just sitting down. I didn't remember anything that happened after that. As I crouched low, and walked closer to the corner, I saw one last glimpse before I got taken out.
