I turn to Kate and give her an awkward smile before quickly looking around for something to break the silence. I spot a little cafe a few stores down. I point to it and say, "Hey, you want to go check out that little cafe? It looks pretty cute."
"I don't have much money with me. I don't really want to spend it on a stupid cupcake," Kate says sharply.
"Well... I'll pay for you, if you want. I have quite a bit of money with me."
She sighs and starts walking in the direction of the cafe very briskly. I have to almost jog to keep up with her.
The line isn't too long in the cafe, thank god; it will save the awkward silence. When we get close to the counter, I mutter to Kate, "Anything takes your fancy?"
"Not really. Maybe that..." She points to a small pastry. The little paper sign beside it states that it is an apricot tart, which happens to be my favourite pastry. "Oh my god! What a coincidence! That's my favourite pastry!" She smiles a little, but I can't tell whether or not it's forced. I turn to the little waitress. "Um, hi! Could we please get two apricot tarts?"
"Yeah, sure. Is that all today?," the waitress replies in a squeaky voice that suits her height.
"Yep." I push the required amount of money over the counter while the waitress grabs our pastries. She passes them to me and I follow Kate to a table. As soon as we sit down, we dig into our pastries. Every now and the, Kate eyes me cautiously. When I finish, I decide to break the silence. I clear my throat and say, "So, how long have you known Drew, Mikey and Ryan?"
She hesitates to answer for a second before replying. "Drew and I have been friends since primary school. Ryan and Mikey became friends with us at the end of primary. And, I started dating Mikey last year." Dating?, I think to myself. And I spent all that time perving at him during the film?
And then, it suddenly hits me. Why am I getting so shocked and... To be honest, a little irritated, that Mikey has a girlfriend? And, what about Drew? I've been struggling to take my eyes off of him too. Well, this is great, I think to myself. It's like grade three all over again.
