"Shouldn't you be like... with your friends or something?" Jake asked rudely, leaning over the table, head flopped over his shoulder in an arrogant manner as he addressed Ellen.
Ellen stopped mid-conversation with Mia and turned with a sharp glare, making Jake flinch and straighten himself. "Shouldn't you be stealing from those of a weaker form than yourself's lunch money?"
Jake scoffed. "No. As if. I'm not that desperate for money. Although I did get this from Mike," Jake produced a plush white and pink unicorn from his bag with a proud grin. Sam let out a laugh, purely just for the sight of Jake with a soft toy in his hands while Ellen gave him a disgusted look.
"Lord knows I weep for humanity if this is what they have to deal with," Ellen announced, still staring at Jake with disbelief as he made the unicorn trot across the table, huffing with amusement, hiding his grin and opened a large packet of cool original Doritos.
He was half way through the packet, just looking around, thinking about Felix and how he hadn't seen him today yet, vaguely listening in to Mia talking to Ellen about how some girl named Ivy Waters had a pregnancy scare and watching Jake become more and more attached to that ridiculous soft toy when Ellen and Mia finally turned to him. "So," Ellen drawled, a wide grin on her face, Sam gulped his crisps in dread, "I heard from Felix you were over at his house yesterday and apparently made an impression with the Baldwin family."
Sam laughed nervously, "ah, yeah. A good one, I hope." He felt his heart give a lurch at the thought of Felix telling Ellen, obviously feeling that Sam's visit was worth some sort of importance to mention it. But just how much did he say to Ellen?
Ellen showed more teeth and was honestly just terrifying. "Oh, you did more than give a good impression. Apparently Oscar couldn't stop talking about you at dinner and his mum was saying just how nice you were to Felix's dad. They all just about worship you."
Sam looked at her, waiting for her to drop the bomb and when she didn't do anything but smile at him he lit up like the skies on New Year.
"Good job, champ," Ellen praised him, trying not genuinely smile looking at Sam all but wag his imaginary tail like the puppy he was, he was hard to be cynical around.
"That's great, Sam," Mia smiled sunnily at him while he grinned wide. Ellen squinted her eyes at how bright they were.
Sam was smiling through the rest of lunch and very obviously looking around for Felix through the crowd of students on the grounds. Jake, however, was still transfixed by the kid toy and didn't seem to be giving it up any time soon for Sam to take it from him and give it back to its owner like he always did, to avoid Jake getting suspended more than anything else.
Jake ended up carrying it about with him all day, never leaving it out of his sight until gym which was when Sam made his move, sneaking into the boys locker rooms and riffling through Jake's locker which he never made the move to lock. Who would dare to steal from Jake Testro, right? Well, for one, Sam - on a daily basis too. It came with a price, Jake never emptied his locker and it was filled with such a stench Sam was always surprised how Jake wasn't walking around like Voldemort after his nose had melted into nothing from the power of it.
He found the stuffed unicorn hidden in Jake's bag, placed carefully and surrounded by t-shirts like a makeshift bed. His best friend was so lame.
Now all he had to do was find Mike.
"Hey, Andrew isn't it?" Sam called after a skinny Asian boy that was exiting the library after Sam had wandered about the school for almost an hour. Andrew turned, a look of surprise on his face as he saw who it was and adjusted his glasses nervously.
"Yes? That's me," he answered carefully as Sam approached with a smile.
"Do you know where Mike is?" He wouldn't exactly say Mike and Andrew were friends, but he had seen them talk and been friendly enough with each other.
Andrew was eyeing him curiously and a little timidly. When he noticed the unicorn he frowned, and ducked his head to fix his glasses again. "He's still in the library." And then scampered off.
"Thanks, brainy dude." Sam called after him, entering the room where he hadn't stepped in since his first year of high school when it was mandatory. Even then he had messed around until he was banned for the rest of the year.
"Hey, Mike! Catch," Sam threw the plushie over to the boy slumped at the table that cried out when the soft thing hit him in the face.
When he finally managed to hold the thing in front of him a look of confusion crossed his face when he looked up at Sam. "Does Jake not want him?"
Startled, Sam stopped. "What?"
"I told Jake he could keep him, he seemed to like him when he was talking to me this morning so I gave him away, god knows I have enough of them," he held out the unicorn to Sam to take back.
Sam had never laughed harder in his life and was promptly thrown out the library by a crabby Mrs Wallace, the librarian, with the unicorn still clutched in his hands.

"Give him to me, Sam," Jake growled the second he spotted his friend in hallway. Sam chuckled, holding up the unicorn a second later which Jake snatched from his hands. "I knew you took Kevin. I knew it."
"Kevin?" Sam asked, trying not very hard to hold in a laugh.
"Everyone needs a name, Sam." Jake snapped back, smoothing down Kevin's fur. "It's just that your parents misnamed you from Dickface."
Sam really laughed then, loud and proud, tears forming at his eyes as he struggled to breathe while Jake glowered at him until he could finally manage to talk. "Sorry, dude, you know how I feel about stealing other people's junk."
Jake frowned more, cheeks blazing, and with a pout said" it was a gift."
Sam laughed again, shaking his head at how ridiculous the people around him were. "Trust me, I know."
"Laugh it up, Dickface," Jake grunted. "Speaking of dicks and faces, how'd it go at Felix's, eh? You never did elaborate on what exactly happened in there when you were fangirling all over my phone."
Sam went scarlet, grinning madly as he thought of the day before. How completely normal it was and yet it had Sam's head swimming and his heart jumping out of his chest. "Nothing really happened it just just..." Sam's eyes trailed down the hall casually and found himself locking eyes with silver just at the end. Felix stood for a moment, his friend Vlad speaking to him at his side, but didn't look as if Felix was paying him attention as he smiled across the hall at Sam and lifted his hand briefly as a sort of wave-salute that had Sam's knees knocking, Sam just grinned wider and waved brashly, causing Felix to turn his head to hide a laugh before disappearing round the corner. Sam gave a wistful sigh."It was just... perfect I guess."
Jake rolled his eyes and slung an arm across his friend's shoulders and steered him down the hall preparing himself for Sam's very poor attempts of poetry about Felix's eyes.
a/n: so college is terrifying and yet I survived and came out of there with friends that are already comfortable with hugging me and stealing my food. I count that as a win - even if a certain someone is going to lose their hand next time it's in my Malteaser bag. So yeah, thanks for the support last chapter guys. I love you all and I wish you all the best in this years education and in general life also.
The unicorn thing was based on the unicorn Jake was actually given on the show Nowhere Boys ((I also added a gif for your pleasure)) it was freaking adorable and I'm putting in.
Also did you know this story was honestly only going to be five chapters? Ha, I don't know what happened either. It is now at 19 and has over 11K reads!! Thanks so much !!! <3
((sorry for any mistakes, I'm mega sick with the cold))
