Wendy stumbled out of the palace wreckage down a small thoroughfare leading to a small keep that was stuck just outside the palace's immediate perimeter. She brushed away some dust as the sun came out from behind a thick bunch of clouds.
Her nose was wriggling. Her stomach was in knots. That scent, that power...it only grew. Wendy balled her hands into fists. She wished Carla were with her. She wished anyone were with her.
She rounded a corner, following a small trail of blood that eventually ceased, but the scent carrying the blood did not. Small tornadoes formed around her. Wendy rested her hand on a building mashup of a gate and arms master.
She tried not to lose it when something destroyed half the palace a few minutes ago, and then when she felt Acnologia's presence once again. She'd watched in horror as, for one moment, he landed in the palace, and then in the next, he was flying.
But then, there were two scents.
There were two Acnologias.
The dragon one still soared through the sky, unstopped, unhinged, destroying every tall building in its path. It tore through the walls of the great arena, the Domus Flau, that was still in the city, completely unfazed by the effects of Universe One.
And the human was just across the thoroughfare from Wendy, resting his head in his hands until he stood up straighter and slowly turned.
"You're one of them," he said. Blue and black magic drifted off his cloak, as if he were trying to contain it. "One of the hatchlings."
Wendy swallowed the lump in her throat. She'd expected to find the others already fighting Acnologia. Being the only one there seemed to surprise both her and Acnologia.
Yet, she couldn't run away. Even if nobody else was coming, she would stay.
"And just a runt at that," Acnologia said. "I'll make this quick. Pity the dragons had to infect someone so young."
"I wasn't infected," Wendy said. "My time with Grandeeney was a blessing."
"A waste of time," Acnologia said.
The dragon soared overhead. Acnologia glowered at it, then smiled.
"The wizard may believe he's created easier targets, but now there are two of us who can destroy the world of yesteryear," Acnologia said.
"You're weaker, aren't you?"
Acnologia shifted his focus back to the little Dragon Slayer. "When I was so strong before that you couldn't begin to fathom my power, this difference means nothing."
"It means enough," Wendy said.
"You don't seem to understand who you're dealing with," Acnologia said. "I am the Arcane Dragon. There is no magic in the world that can harm me."
"We'll just see about that."
"Then come, girl. I'll grant you the first move, and end you in the next."
Wendy lowered, preparing gusts of wind behind herself to shoot forward at a speed that hopefully Acnologia couldn't keep up with. Acnologia did not move.
She attacked, launching with all the power of the wind at her back. Just as Acnologia lowered his arm, she cut off her speed and launched up. The ground in front of Wendy was obliterated, vaporized even.
"Sky Dragon Roar!"
All of the momentum she'd gained in her charge hit Acnologia at the same time as the magic she attacked him with, which served only to push him back a meager amount. Acnologia unfurled his cloak.
