RIAH.
That was the only person I could think about since the other night when we got trapped in the school. Riah.
I couldn't wrap my head around exactly why I had been thinking of her.
Was it because she went M.I.A.? Partially.
But there was also something else.
Like when we were hiding in the locker room, I noticed the specks of green in her brown eyes, the faint freckles across her nose, and the way my hand fit perfectly on her waist.
Oh, God.
I shouldn't be thinking like this at all. Yet, I couldn't even stop myself.
There had been so many questions, so many answers I was looking for but scared to know.
The main question that scared me was: did I like my best friend more than just a friend?
I had never questioned myself about that once since I had been friends with her. I mean, Riah was a boy's dream with her caring personality, that bright smile, and how beautiful she was.
But we had always been just friends.
There was never a time when I had thought anything different.
...Until a few days ago.
For the last few days, I had been stressed about where she was, and it was then that I realised I truly am lost without her. I didn't even sleep in my own bed because it smelled like her usual cinnamon perfume, which only made me stress out more to find her.
Never had I not slept in my own bed when she wasn't home.
That was how I knew I was confused and getting mixed feelings.
But I shouldn't be over here.
She was my best friend.
Even the conversation with my dad about Riah had been stuck in my head. And I think I knew what he meant when he said I was oblivious.
"All right, geniuses, listen up," Coach said, snapping me out of my Riah bubble as I sat down next to Scott. "Due to the recent pinkeye epidemic—thank you, Greenberg—the following people have made first line on a probationary basis, emphasis on the word probationary."
Turning my head, I looked at Scott with wide eyes, but he was too focused on his glove.
Man, was heartbreak really that bad? Damn.
Anyway, not my main concern right now. I could finally be off the bench for once.
"Rodrigues," Coach called out, and a few of us clapped while I was almost off the edge of my seat. "Taylor, and..." He moved his paper closer to his face, and I inched forward off my seat, just waiting to hear my name.
