The party ran smoothly. Everything had gone gracefully according to her checklist.
"I don't see any reason why this party won't be a success," Mrs. Lewitt caught Darcy fidgeting her pen over a clipboard at the corner of the reception area.
"Oh—Mrs. Lewitt" she did an obligatory kiss on the cheeks as a sign of respect, "I hope so..." her eyes went back on her checklist.
"Well, I guess there is one" Mrs. Lewitt blurted and caught Darcy's attention.
"There is?"
Mrs. Lewitt pointed out to someone over the far corner on her left. Everything would've been a success, except perhaps Val. In the past hour, he'd been avoiding her.
She tried not to let it bother her as she went on checking her staff and ensuring every guest had a full glass of champagne and plenty to talk about.
The reception theme was "marvelous" as what everyone would complement Darcy's work. The interesting vintage ambiance combined with a modern vibe which provided a splash of color in the entire grand convention hall inside Val's mansion.
Leo's assistant had mentioned his love of antiques and history and the decorations bounced easily from that. She wanted to impress the guest of honor and most especially the deal Val had ever wanted.
Well she had taken an once-over from his husband. She wore a an open back black sequined floor length gown, draped with pearl jewelry on the back paired with her black leather maryjane pumps with ties, channeling a 1920's vibe. She'd only gotten it thru online shopping this morning and it looked great on her.
Not that anyone else had noticed.
She pulled herself back and smiled gracefully around the guests surrounding her, determined to be the hostess Val expected her to be.
She mingled along with every conversation there is, but she always turned to see Val's piercing blue eyes on her and his expression seems to be a little daring.
The bedroom sharing didn't go too well. He obviously hated it. Though he didn't say a word about it, his actions were transparent. Was he waiting until the party was over to give me my divorce papers?
Turning her back on Val and the thought of being a divorced woman bugged her. She went over the cocktails and poured herself some to clear her mind.
"Are you trying to get drunk, lady?"
A man in a classic black slim fit suit, white crisp shirt and Ray ban spectacles, who stood next to her said casually. She didn't turn to face him instead she shoved the entire content of her cocktail glass and poured another one.
"A bottle of gin or whisky could do the trick" he grinned.
She exhaled after shoving the next glass to her mouth. "I am trying to impress someone," she uttered then turned to face him, "I tried so...hard."
Their eyes met, and she felt a strange feeling about those silver eyes darting at her. It was strong as steel, then he smiled contrasting the way his eyes had shown.
"And I see you're doing great." He said and grinned at her knowingly as he went to join some of the guest.
Not one person in this room had noticed she had a mess of uncertainty twisting in her stomach.
