Chapter 14 : The First Thing She Gave Back

Recovery felt strange to Ananya. Not physically — that part was predictable. Fever down. Body weak. Appetite slowly coming back. Head clearer. But emotionally—

She felt... full.

And that scared her a little. Because fullness meant attachment.

And attachment meant risk.

But this time—

The fear didn't win.

Three days after the fever night, she stepped out in the evening for the first time.

The air felt different.

Or maybe she did.

The small roadside flower stall near the pharmacy caught her eye. It always did. But this time, she didn't just admire and walk past.

She stopped.

The old vendor smiled.

"Jasmine? Roses? Fresh today."

Her eyes moved slowly across the flowers.

Then she saw it.

A small bunch of white tuberoses tied loosely with thread.

Simple.

Quiet.

Fragrant.

Like something that stayed without demanding attention.

"I'll take this," she said.

She stood outside Adrian's door for almost two full minutes.

Holding the flowers.

Heartbeat slightly faster.

Not anxiety.

Just... weight of meaning.

Then she knocked.

He opened the door in casual home clothes, slightly surprised.

"Hey—"

And then he saw the flowers.

And his brain took half a second longer to process.

"For...?" he asked gently.

"For you," she said.

Not dramatic.

Not shy.

Just honest.

He took them carefully.

Like they were fragile.

Like the gesture was fragile.

"Thank you," he said.

And for the first time—

She let someone say thank you to her without deflecting it.

"Can you... come?" she asked.

"To your place?"

She nodded.

Inside her apartment, he noticed something new immediately.

A notebook on the dining table.

Hardbound.

Cloth cover.

Pressed slightly from use.

She picked it up.

Held it like something important.

Then handed it to him.

"What is this?" he asked softly.
