Chapter 12 : The House That Made Space For Her

If someone had told Ananya a year ago that Sundays would become the most chaotic, loud, emotionally overwhelming, and strangely peaceful days of her week, she would have laughed politely and gone back to studying.

Sundays, for her, used to mean structured routines.

Wake up.
Church.
Return.
Read.
Prepare for week.
Repeat.

Controlled. Predictable. Safe.

But now—

Sundays meant the opposite. And somehow... she felt safer than she ever had.

It started with church rides. At first, it was just convenience.

"Why go separately?" Elsa had said one morning. "We all go same place anyway."

And just like that, Ananya found herself sitting in the backseat of Adrian's car, Elsa beside her, Thomas in front narrating random traffic stories that made zero sense but somehow made everyone laugh.

The first time, she sat straight. Careful. Aware.

By the fourth Sunday; She leaned comfortably into the seat, holding Elsa's extra rosary absentmindedly while Thomas argued with Google Maps voice directions.

And Adrian—

Adrian would glance at the rear view mirror sometimes.

Just to check. She was okay. And she always was.

Then came grocery runs. Those were chaos.

Unplanned. Unstructured.

Full of Thomas putting unnecessary items into the cart "just in case guests come." Full of Elsa reminding him they didn't run a supermarket. Full of Adrian quietly replacing overpriced brands with reasonable ones. And somewhere between vegetable aisles and billing counters—

Ananya stopped feeling like an outsider tagging along. She became part of the group. Holding extra bags. Arguing about which brand of tea powder was better. Sneaking extra chocolate into Elsa's section of the cart.

And then—

Came fashion show time.

It happened accidentally. One Sunday after shopping, they all landed at Adrian's house with multiple shopping bags and zero energy to cook immediately.

"Try and show," Elsa had said casually, pulling out a kurti she had bought.

Thomas whistled dramatically. Adrian clapped sarcastically. Elsa bowed like she was on a ramp.

Everyone laughed. And suddenly, It became tradition.

That day, Ananya sat on the edge of the bed in Elsa's room, holding a soft sage green salwar set she had bought.

She could hear them outside. Thomas narrating like a fashion show host. Elsa laughing loudly. Adrian saying something in his low voice that made them both groan. Her chest tightened slightly. Not anxiety. But unfamiliarity. Being seen without performance was still new.

She stepped out halfway. Then paused. Then looked toward the hall.

Her eyes found Adrian immediately. He wasn't staring. Just watching. Present. She hesitated. He gave one small nod. Simple. Steady. Enough.

She changed. Came out. And before she could overthink—

She did a small swirl. Not dramatic. Just instinct. Just movement. Just her.
