Chapter 16 — The Quiet Ways Love Learns to Stay

The night breeze carried the smell of wet earth and jasmine.

Ananya stood on her balcony, watering the plants slowly, carefully — like she always did when she needed to calm her mind. The yellow balcony light made everything softer. Quieter.

Inside, the apartment was dim except for the kitchen light.

She knew he was there. Not because she heard him.

Because she felt him. The comfort of another presence that didn't demand attention... but filled space.

She finished watering the last plant and leaned against the railing.

"Did you eat?" she asked without turning.

"Hmm," Adrian replied from inside. "Half. Burnt the other half."

She smiled.

"You didn't burn. You over-roasted."

He walked out to the balcony, wiping his hands on a kitchen towel.

"Same difference."

They stood side by side.

Not touching. Just... existing together.

The city below was alive — traffic sounds, distant bike horns, someone laughing loudly in another building.

Inside this balcony, time felt slower. Ananya traced her finger over a leaf absentmindedly.

"I used to hate coming back from hometown," she said suddenly.

"It never felt like home. Just... a place I existed."

He didn't interrupt.

"I didn't know a place could feel like home until..." She paused.

He turned slightly toward her.

"Until?" he asked softly.

She swallowed.

"Until I came here."

A pause.

Then she added, quieter —

"Until you started being here."

The air shifted.

He inhaled slowly.

"I was scared," he said.

She looked at him now.

"Of what?"

"This," he said simply.
"Of needing someone's presence this much."

Her eyes softened. She stepped a little closer.

Not touching. Just closer.

"I think..." she said slowly, carefully choosing each word,
"I crossed that line somewhere between you feeding me when I had fever... and you talking to my plants."

He let out a small breath that was almost a laugh. They stood like that for a long moment.

No background music. No dramatic rain. Just balcony light.

Night breeze. City noise.

And truth waiting.

"I love you, Anu ma," he said quietly.

Like he was saying something ordinary. Like he was saying something sacred.

Her lips parted slightly. No shock. No panic.
