My eyes fluttered open, but quickly closed due to the bright white lights. All I could hear was the steady beeping of machines. What's happening? I opened my eyes once more and squinted, trying to get them to adjust to the bright lights.
"You're awake." I turned my head to the left and saw those bright blue eyes that had come to light up my world.
That's when I looked at my surroundings. White walls, hard plastic chairs, beeping machines. I looked down. I was lying on a flat mattress with a light blanket over top of me, my head lying on a lumpy pillow. A hospital, I'm in a hospital.
"Your parents are just grabbing some food, they'll be back soon," Nick told me.
I nodded, in shock of what has happened. All I remember is blacking out as Nick ran into the bathroom after I'd cut. Then, I remembered nothing. The only thing I remembered after I blacked out was that very vivid dream. That wasn't even reality, but it felt as if it was.
Nick stood up and hit a button, then told the nurse that I was awake. Just as he sat down, my parents walked in.
"Oh my gosh, sweetheart," my mom exclaimed as she ran up to me. That's the first thing she's said to me that wasn't an answer to a question in over a week. She wrapped her arms around me.
When she pulled away, it was only then that I realized there was an IV in my arm. That same arm was wrapped tightly in gauze. It was my left arm, the one with the scars.
She pulled away and my dad hugged me. When he pulled away and sat down, I saw that my mom and dad both had tears in their eyes. Nick's eyes were bloodshot and there were bags under his eyes.
A knock on the door interrupted my observations. The knob turned and a nurse walked in.
"Hello," she said.
"Hi," I replied, a little hoarse from not speaking for so long.
"Did they explain what happened?" she asked, nodding towards my parents.
"No," my mom answered. "We just gave her hugs and then you came in."
"Alright. Do you remember much from last night?" the nurse asked, turning her attention back to me.
"All I remember is cutting too deeply, getting woozy, and Nick walking in as I fell to the floor and blacked out."
"Okay, so you don't remember much. Do you want to know what happened?" she asked.
"Yes, please."
"Nick called an ambulance and we got you in straight away because you were unconscious from blood loss. You had struck a vein and we cleaned you up and stitched up the wound. Luckily, you didn't need a blood transfusion."
"Okay," I answered.
"I'll leave you and your family alone now. I'll be back to check on you shortly." I nodded and she left the room.
"Why?" my dad asked. "Why did you do it? Why didn't you tell us?"
"I- I didn't know how to tell you. I did it because I ob- obviously have depression and then everything at school. . ." I trailed off, a tear rolling down my cheek.
Nick got out of his chair and grabbed my right hand in his left. Then, he kissed my forehead. "Lay, you need to tell us; you need to get help."
I silently nodded, knowing that he was right. More tears came.
I took a deep breath, trying to gather everything together. "Okay, s- so it all started in November when Josh and I broke up and what he did to me at that hockey game-- which you all know of. Th- That night was the first night that I cut myself.
