A person very dear to me once told me 'to never give up, no matter how much it hurts'. And that's exactly what I do during volleyball. And everything I for in life.
Well, I was changing in the locker room getting ready for practice, then I took a look at my shoulder. It was throbbing and bruised. It was hurting soo much, but I haft to suffer through it.
I run out, ready to get to work.
I get on the end line. Shelby gives me a comforting look.
"Okay, let's get started!" screamed Coach Hann. Then nodded at me.
I nodded back.
"Okay! High knees to the net and back!" I yell.
We warmup for about 30 minutes. Then all the hard stuff comes.
We split up in 3 groups- setters, hitters, and passers.
We have captains for every group, but I am a captain for setters and passers. Yeah im that good.
We start off with 6 vs. 6. And whoever loses has to run suicides.
I start off serving I hit the ball and my shoulder popped so loud that Shelby gave me a look, and she was all the way across the court!
" You okay Miller?" Asks Coach Hann.
"Yeah, just warming up I guess." I say with a sigh.
Well good news- the serve was pretty good. It went over the net then dropped. Bad news- I could barely move my shoulder.
It just got worse over the next hour and a half. I will just put ice on it when I get home. And keep my secret a secret.
Shelby caught back up with me after practice " Dude I heard your shoulder pop atleast 5 times. Are you okay?"
"Yeah. I never give up." I said with a sly smile.
"Well try and take it easy. If you need anything give me a call." I nod and we both said our goodbyes.
Then I look over and saw the greatest boyfriend ever sitting on the hood of his car waiting on me with some flowers.
He is so sweet!
I walk up to him and gave him a very big smile, and wrapped my arms around his neck.
He put down the flowers and started kissing me. His hands going up and down my back and playing with my messed up hair. The kisses trail down to my neck, that's when I heard an all too familiar voice behind us.
"Miller I need to talk to. RIGHT NOW!!" He has perfect timing.
I turn around and gave him a smile," Of course Coach. I will be right back Chase." After giving Chase a smile and turning to head to Coach Hann.
"Miller I got to talk to you." He looks mad.
" What about Coach?" trying to look innocent as I think about all I did over the last 24 hours.
"Don't act like your so innocent. I did hear hear your shoulder today. That's not healthy, Miller." Good lord I hate it when he calls me by my last name. It makes me feel like im being interrogated.
"Umm. I- ii. I cant tell you what happened Coach, but it ain't hurting any." I lie. And I have a really bad guilty conscience. Suddenly my palms start getting sweaty.
He looks at me for a while before saying," Well if it ain't hurting I don't see any problem, but if it even tingles I want you to come straight to me, okay?" He said with a serious look on his face.
"Of course Coach" Giving him my confident smile.
"Well see you tomorrow. Ice that shoulder tonight" he said.
"Yes sir." I said doing a little happy dance inside my head. I can't believe I got away with it! I am so proud of my self right now.
I skip back to my gorgeous boyfriend with the same confident smile on my face.
"How was practice?" he said with a little anxious look in his eye.
"Painful but bearable. Now I just haft to deal with my dad." I say with a sigh.
You see my dad has a really bad temper and he takes it out on me. Ever since my mom got sent off to jail when I 5, haven't seen her since, he has been hurting me mentally and physically. He thinks im lying about my shoulder for attention. And I am almost to my breaking point.
"You know you can always stay in our guest room." he says.
"No. I already told you that my dad would kill you." I say to him as we get In his car.
When we get in the car he intertwines our hands. His hand feels so good with mine.
"And he will hurt you if you keep staying there." he says with guilt in his eyes.
"Hey, I only haft to put up with it for two more years and we will be off to Vanderbilt." I say with a smile. This school is the best medical school in the south, and when you are from in the middle of nowhere Georgia where everybody knew everybody who can't keep secrets. You want to get out right after High School.
"If you can get a scholarship. And you can't with that shoulder. Your blowing away your whole entire life, because you are scared of your dad. Its not fair for you." he says and he is clearly frustrated .
Dang it he is right. I hate it when he is right.
When we come to a red light. I pull on his chin so he can look at me.
"Your Right." I say quietly.
"What was that? 'Your right?' How does those worded taste like comin' out of your mouth?" he says with a chuckle.
"Like vinegar." I say. as he laughs at me.
"Look I will make you a proposal , I will tell my dad if you come with me and protect me." I say.
"Of course" as he kisses my forehead and we pull into my apartment complex. "Let's go"
"Whoa. Whoa. We are doing this right now?" I say sadly.
" Better sooner then never." He says with a confident smile.
I sigh and get out of the car, walking to the door. This is the moment of truth.
