Sitting on top of my thinking rock, just by the borders of the pack land, was something I did every morning after my run. I have been doing this every day for a year now. Ever since my first shift. I need to let my wolf out every day. She was quite antsy if I didn't so I made it a routine.
**flashback**
It's was the morning of my sixteenth birthday. I woke to being unnaturally warm. I looked at my bed and it was soaked to the bone with sweat. I was confused and then that's when I heard it. The first crack and then it was followed by a scream. My scream.Immediately my father and mother where in my room. They knew what was happening when the next crack came. The first change is always the hardest. The second will hurt, but nothing like it does the first time. My ears started to ring and then I felt like I was floating.
I looked over to see my brother holding me as softly as possible and taking me out of my room and downstairs. I needed to be outside. As soon as I completed the shift I would need to run.
I feel myself being placed on the cold grass, but I was burning up. I started to rip and tear at my clothes and skin. Screaming as loud as my lungs would let me. I could barely see, but what I could make out was more people coming around.
I was being surrounded by the pack in my neighborhood. They had woken up to my screams and knowing what was happening they came to be there as support for me. I continued to hear cracks and my body starting to go numb.
I started to smell everything around me. Everyone's scent and even the forests around me. I could smell a deer from 500 yards away. My mouth started to water and another crack rang out in my ears. What lasted a few hours finally finished with one last heart breaking crack.
I lay there with my eyes closed and my paws crossed. I was breathing heavy and unsure of what to do. I had blocked out the rest of the pack trying to link me. It wasn't until I felt a nose nudge me. I opened my eyes and looked up.
I was surrounded by a bunch of other wolves. The one that nudged me was my father he is a dark auburn wolf with white tips on his ears. Next to him is my mother with brown and auburn spots. My brother's wolf was a deep brown with a white tip on his tail.
I finally stood up on all fours and looked around. The one person besides my family that I wanted to be there wasn't seen. That's when I lifted my nose and smelt for him. Either the wind was blowing just right or I had his scent down, but I smelt he was walking this way.
He was still in his human form and looking worried. He rubbed a hand through his disheveled hair as he approached me. He walks over to me and starts to pet me. I purr as he does this and he leans into my ear and whispers, "Pen Pen it's time to run now. I'm going to shift and we will all go with you. You ready?"
I nodded to him and nudged him forward. He let out a soft chuckle and started to shift. I watched in amazement as he turned into a dark tan wolf with random brown spots. He was gorgeous. I just stood there looking at him until my wolf finally spoke up. Let's go Penelope I wanna run.
Who was I to deny my wolf the simple pleasures. So I looked behind me to the opening to the forest and ran off. We ran as a group for hours with my family and best friends with me. It was amazing and I could never ask for a better first run. I didn't want it to end.
Most of the other pack members were getting tired so they linked me with my congratulations and headed home. While mom and dad got tired as well and did the same.
Don't stay out to late dear, congrats. See you at home. Oh and happy birthday baby girl. She linked me before running home with dad. I was finally left with with Devon and my brother. We stopped by a pond the east and I sat down. I felt so alive and so did my wolf. I had slowly started hearing her in my head, but now she was singing. She was happy and content and finally free. Make me a promise Penelope. She said to me.
Anything for you, wait what is your name?
It's Joy. Great to meet you. Can you make a promise to run me once a day please. This feels so amazing and I would hate to not be able to do it.
I smiled in my wolf form causing the two male wolves in front of me to turn their heads slightly. I responded to her then. I promise.
I slowly made my way over to the pond and leaded in. Looking at my reflection in the slight dawn of the sun I was beautiful. I was a chocolate brown with auburn spots. I had white socks On my front paws and a small white patch on the top of my right eye. I looked beautiful. After looking at myself and feeling my wolf satisfied with my promise all I remember after that was laying down and falling asleep.

Ever since that day I have made a point to run every morning. It makes me feel refreshed and allows me to keep my promise. After I am done with the run I usually shift, sit and watch the sun come up, and then run back home just in time for breakfast.
The sun shone extra amazing today and I couldn't wait for today to start. Devon should be home this afternoon after joining his father on a trip to a partnering pack to talk about resigning a treaty that has been in place for years.
The alpha and the beta are about to both step down in less then six months and they wanted to make sure everything was in place and the successors knew what they were dealing with. They had been shadowing them for over a year now and it seemed like I saw Devon less and less. It made my heart ache just thinking bout it.
So I jumped off my rock, tossed the large t-shirt I was wearing back behind the tree, and shifted. Joy immediately started prancing and then we took off. Jumping over branches, dodging rocks, low branches, chasing little animals until finally we reach the small clearing behind my house. I sneak behind a tree where I hide some clothes and put them on.
Feeling content with my run I start for the back door of the house. But, something tugs at me though as if saying go look around to the front. So instead of questioning it I do. That's when his scent hits me. Devon is back early. I break into a run before being stopped dead in my tracks when I see there is someone with him. A female someone and she is unloading bags.
**A/N** Here is the start to my new story. I should have more chapters posted within the following weeks! I hope you enjoy so far! I cant wait to get going with this story. Its going to be fun! **
