I stepped into the trailer. My heart skipped a few beats. Nyx was on the couch, with her knees pulled up to her chin, and she was surrounded by mountains of Kleenexes. "Zoey!" She cried my name and it felt like someone had stabbed me in the heart.

"Oh my gosh Nyx! What happened!?" I'm pretty sure all color was drained from my face.

"It's awful, just horrible!"

"Well tell me!" Oops. Too soon. Too strong. Dammit. I started to stroke the side of her face, wiping tears away from her cheeks. She sat up, covering her hand over mine and started to breathe heavily, and pull herself together.

"Ok. So Matt went to go get some food from inside and he saw the shadow figure." She paused let out a few sobs and breathed heavily again. Then she continued, "He said he heard a scream, then he ran to my mom's room to find their throats cut." She broke. While she laid in my lap crying,

I thought about what she had told me:

1. Matt went inside and saw a shadowy figure. Shit! 2. Her parents throats had been slit. 3. Nyx's parents were dead. As it started to process I gasped out loud. I didn't realize I was crying until Matt handed me a wad of Kleenex. I nodded at him. Then my phone beeped. I set Nyx back onto the couch into a fetal position, and then went to my backpack. It was a text from my mom. My heart stopped. It said, "Zoey get home now! It's your father." My heart stopped. Matt came and took my phone to read it and mouthed the word, "Go." He didn't need to tell me twice! I kissed Nyx on the head and told her I'd be back. Then I hugged Matt goodbye and drove home.
