Something about midnight made pizza taste even better. Ellie hadn't bothered to make herself dinner; she had a paper to write after all. She had spent hours working on it since she finished the work for her other teachers. She had written a page and gathered five sources, so she deserved a reward. The only thing good in her apartment was the pizza from last night. She yawned as she grabbed the plate from the microwave. She should have gone to bed hours ago, and she hadn't made any progress. At least she had the weekend to go to city and do some more research. Then maybe later she and Mar could shop for a bit, that would be nice.
Ellie was about to text her as she sat by the computer with her dinner. Then she remembered one it was midnight and two she had put her phone in her sock drawer so she wouldn't get distracted. So she sighed, and went back to finding more sources. Then she realized that it was exactly midnight. She suddenly cursed herself for not having her phone on her. The King Violent's new single was coming out at midnight! She had to listen to it. She looked it up online, and found it on there. She knew that it was midnight, but she blasted the heavy metal band anyway. She had to hear this new song. A steady rain echoed on her roof, which was annoying and distracting. Then she heard a knock on her door.
Who in God's name would come here at this hour, was her only thought. When another knock resounded from her door Ellie sighed and paused her computer. She thought about shouting, but that was rude and the last thing she wanted was to Ms. Calvarez to yell at her again. For an old woman, she knew enough swears to give an ATM a heart attack. So Ellie stood up and opened the door.
"Alex..." Ellie started to snap, but then she realized it wasn't her ex standing at the door, instead there was a bleeding woman, at first Ellie could only see a gash on her head but then she saw the cuts and bruises that ran along her. The woman's face was pallid and every breath seemed labored.
"What... oh my God are you alright?" Ellie asked.
"I... heard you need a roommate" the girl said, before she collapsed on her apartment floor.
Oh God is she dead? Ellie thought her mind panicking. She knelt down and felt the girl's pulse and she was still breathing. She knew she should call 911, as she dragged the girl on her couch, but her phone was in the sock drawer. At least she thought it was in the sock drawer.... Once Ellie cleared off the pillows and gently placed the girl there, she ran to grab the first kit from on top her fridge. For now her main problem was the girl's gash on her head. She opened the kit and found some Band-Aids and stuff. She realized that it was going to need stitches. She knew she would have to go to Mar's but she knew she'd be hearing about it for years if she woke her up this late.
She grabbed her keys, locked the door behind her and stepped outside. Marisol Claros lived across the street from her, it was part of the reason why they grew so close freshman year. She was majoring in law, but her mom was a nurse. After so many bring your kid to work days Mar was a natural. When Ellie knocked on the door the first time she didn't expect an answer, on the second time though her friend answered.
"What the hell do you even know what time it is? Are you drunk or something?" Mar asked.
"No. I got a new roommate..."
"At this hour?" Mar questioned.
"She's beat up pretty bad, not sure what happened but she needs help" Ellie explained.
"Fine." Mar said as she shrugged on a sweatshirt to cover her tank top. "But you owe me" she added as they started walking.
The first thing Mar did when we got inside was go straight for the first aid kit. Ellie could hear her muttering to herself, but her Spanish wasn't the best. She filled up a bowl of water, and grabbed a towel and put it on the table by the couch. Then in hindsight she placed a trashcan by the side of the injured girl's head. She didn't want puke on her rug. She wasn't sure if that would help, but there wasn't much she could do. She could see Mar's hands moving fast, one second she was stitching something then she was bandaging up something else.
