Chapter 13
The Leper Stare
“Your church is like my three year old niece,” Missy said, after listening to last nights’ tale of hymnal throwing and emergency room visits. “She cries one minute then suddenly starts laughing, then gets mad and says she hates you, followed by wanting you to hold her.”
“It does sound like your church,” Mick agreed, munching on his taco. “If I were a church going man, I’d certainly avoid your church, that is, unless I wanted to experience what living on a soap opera’s like.”
“Ah me, me,” Missy sang out.
“Silvah!” Mick returned.
“Go-old,” Missy finished. I ignored their chorus.
“I’m not missing the church so much, it’s losing Yvonne that has me feeling strange.”
“You couldn’t have loved her,” Missy said. “You hardly knew her.”
“I don’t know tacos, but I love them,” Mick said, taking another bite.
“Ah beep, beep!” Missy belched.
“Ah roo-gah, ah roo-gah,” I said, trying to get into it, but Mick and Missy just stared at me as if I were a leper.
“Some people!” Mick exclaimed, looking over at Missy.
“Really,” Missy said, taking a bite of her burrito. I shook my head, amused, and took a bite of my own burrito.
“That girl’s not worth it,” Mick began. “I mean, well, she’s nice looking but something’s missing.”
“Yeah, she’s missing substance,” Missy said.
“Substance?” I asked, amazed to hear that from someone who acts like a scatterbrain.
“Yeah, substance. You know, like self honor, stand by your man stuff.”
“Are you a stand by your man type girl?” Mick asked Missy.
“I sure am!”
“Do you have a boyfriend Missy?” I asked.
“I have many,” she answered.
“And you stand by them all! Ah me, me!” Mick exclaimed.
“Sil-vah!” Missy said.
“Gold,” I said. They both gave me the leper stare. “So you didn’t like Yvonne?” I asked Mick, untangling myself from their eyes.
“Didn’t like or dislike her,” he answered me. “But I could tell that she’s a paper person.”
“Paper person?” I asked.
“Yeah, you know, no substance,” Missy answered. “Looks like a person but as soon as you squeeze her, she crumples.”
“That what you mean Mick?” I asked.
“Of course,” he answered, amazing me at how these two seemed on the same wavelength.
I sighed. “Well I guess it’s good that it’s over.”
“Yeah, now you can find someone else,” Missy said.
“I don’t know about that. I don’t exactly have women standing in line to go out with me.”
“Sure you do!” Missy exclaimed. “You just haven’t found where the line is yet.”
“Ah today,” Mick said, looking at his watch.
