Chapter Ten: Max
I opened my eyes and saw a crowd around me.
“Uhmm….okay, why is everyone surrounding me?” I said but they didn’t answer. I don’t even think they were paying any attention to me at all. I sighed then I notice they were looking at something behind me.
I turned and saw Dylan crying. “Hey man, why so sad? You get to watch a PG-13 movie, you should be happy” when I was about to touch him, my hand just passed through him. What was that? I thought as I stepped back.
I heard an ambulance coming. “What’s happening?” I asked myself, and then before I could think of anything else, I have my answer.
When Dylan stepped away, I saw a boy, same as my age, lying on the ground with blood dripping from his head and his right arm and leg were badly dislocated. I moved forward to check it out. Do I know him? Is he dead? Then it struck me. The boy lying dead on the ground is me.
I felt my whole world spinning. I was out of balance. Both my knees hit the ground, and then I realized I was crying. “I’m dead!...I’m a ghost!... I’m Casper!... How could I die so young?” I screamed to the world.
Men with white uniforms approach my dead body. They were checking if there was still pulse. They were looking for any movement. Finally, they place my body on a stretcher and placed it inside the ambulance.
I got back to my senses and went with my dead body. Before they closed the door, another stretcher was carried inside. I saw my sister unconsciously lying on the stretcher. As I grabbed her, my hand passed through her. Oh yeah, I’m Casper from now on.
We finally reached the hospital. They unloaded us and rushed us to the surgery room.
In the movies like “Casper the friendly ghost” where the ghost can pass through walls and fly, it’s not like that in real life (Well my dead life). I can’t fly or pass through walls. I’m still the same but no one can see me.
I waited outside the surgery room because I didn’t want to see people dissecting me. While I was waiting, I saw Cody and Dylan in the hallway followed by my parents. They stopped in front of me.
My mother was crying when she asked “Are they going to be alright?”
Dad wrapped his arm around mom and said “They’re alright dear, they’re both strong especially Max”
I started to cry again, hearing something like that from my father touched my dead heart. I stood up and hugged them both. I know I can’t touch them but, I so want to do this now.
They finally broke their embrace when a bald man came from inside.
“Mr. and Mrs. Collins?” he asked
“Yes, Are the alright doctor?” my mom asked desperately
“The girl is fine, she’s now resting. She seemed to hit her head really hard but no major damage was done” He answered. Thank you God, Hazel is alright. A gleam of light spread over mom’s face after hearing her girl is alright.
He sighed before saying “……but for the boy” the light faded and left a dull face. “He was critically damaged, broken limbs and a crack on his skull” no one said a word. A tear streamed down my parent’s face.
The doctor continued “He’s in a coma, so he’s not really dead. We hope that he’ll wake up soon”
When he said this, a grin filled my face. Excitement rushes through my body. I wasn’t dead. Maybe I could find a way back inside my body again. Maybe I could still turn the tables; I just need to know how.
