Chapter Fifteen: Hazel
Today is the day I’m going to see Max, I said to myself. Everything will turn out according to plan. No need to worry. They will fall for the distraction.
It’s already 5:15, 30 minutes before we barricade and lock the security guards on their guard house. Jill called me a while ago and said, the band already knows what to do and they would be here at exactly six o ‘clock.
How many hours from now, I’ll see my baby brother, that thought made me smile and relax.
Thirty minutes passed by so quickly. I asked Megan to help me out on his. Barricading the doors was easy because the guards are usually busy watching football. No security guards in the hospital because they are highly secure, they said.
Jill was right, at exactly six o’clock; a group of European boys entered the lobby. Megan and I were by the side trying to act normal. They gave us a nod and went to the receptionist as according to plan. We could see the receptionist shaking her head but a red tint was now forming on her cheeks. Finally, she gave in and allowed them to play.
The band went outside to get their instruments. At six thirty, they started playing. A lot of nurses and patients ran down the lobby to see the famous boy band.
“I hope their songs can cure sickness” Megan said.
“I think it could” I replied. I really think it could because you could see patients looking very lively and happy. At least they get to forget their sickness for a while.
As I was thinking this, I didn’t notice it was already 6:40. Good thing Megan elbowed me and gestured that this was my cue.
I ran up the stairs. Two floors up to be exact. I don’t see or hear anyone, just the music from the lobby. I ran towards the ICU. Everything was according to plan until a big looking nurse blocked my way. She was between me and the door.
She was staring at me with those vicious eyes. I looked at the clock on top of the door; it was already 6:45. I only have fifteen minutes left to see Max.
“Uhh...Hi?” I didn’t know what to do. This wasn’t part of the plan. Everyone should be downstairs listening to the mini concert. Cody was right, my plan would never work.
She raised her hand and tried to speak but she was cut off by a doctor who stood beside me. I didn’t notice him approaching.
“What seems to be the problem, Mrs. Smith?” the doctor asked.
I don’t know who he is but I could feel I met him before. I know those blue eyes. It belongs to someone who means a lot to me.
“Uhh... she was running in the hallway, sir. You should know that running in the hallway is a big no no” she said
“Don’t tell me about the rules, Mrs. Smith. I know them by heart. Why won’t you take a break first and I’ll handle this young woman from here and I’ll make sure she would never do this offense again” he gave her an endearing smile. Well, no one can say no to that.
Mrs. Smith nodded and went off. When she is no longer visible, the mysterious doctor removed his face mask and gave me smile. It was Cody. This was what Cody was telling me. My plan would work but there would be a problem at the end.
I didn’t know what to say. Thank you? Sorry I was a jerk? But he didn’t give me any time to say something. He grabbed my hand opened the door to the ICU.
“You still have twelve minutes to say whatever you want to say to Max” he said. I still was unable to speak. How could he help me even though I pushed him away?
“I’ll be outside….Make your last words to him nice okay?” then he shut the door, leaving me in this silent place.
I looked around and there I saw Max. He was close to the window. I ran towards him.
