Chapter Fourteen: Max
“Aaaahhhh!” I let out a loud scream.
The smile on the old man’s face turned upside down. “Well that’s weird, a soul scared of another soul” e tilted his head sideways as he said this.
“You…y-you…you can...” I was so terrified. It’s been almost five days since someone talked to me. I never thought anyone could see me but this old man said he’s also a soul right? Maybe he could help me get inside my body again.
“Of course lad, I can see you. I’m not blind you see” he said.
I know I’ve seen this man somewhere before. I just can’t remember. He noticed I was looking at him in a confused way. “Don’t tell me you don’t recognize your old grandfather. I always changed your smelly diapers before”
That clicked me. I saw him in one of grandma’s old photos. I never actually met him because he’s dead when mom gave birth to me. “How could I remember you? I was born three months after you died”
“Really now, then who’s the baby with smelly diapers?” he said as he scratched his head.
“That baby would probably be my sister, Hazel”
“Oh yes of course”
I still don’t know why he’s here. It took time for me to ask him “So what are you doing here and how come I could see you?”
“Spirits only allow themselves to be seen by other spirits if they want to”
“Then why did you show yourself to me? Could you possibly help me with my problem?”
“Problems?” he laughed then he continued “You don’t have any problems when you’re dead boy!”
Dead? Did he just say I’m dead? I’m in a coma; I still have time to live right?
“Grandpa, how could I be dead when my body is upstairs breathing?”
He strokes his beard while thinking. I think he was in a deep thought because it took 10 minutes for him to answer but all those thinking led to one answer I didn’t like, “I don’t know boy”
That answer just disappoints me. There has to be a reason why he’s here. Take this as a sign, I said to myself.
I didn’t realize he was walking towards the hospital when I asked “Do you think it’s possible to return back to your own body?”
“Ha! If that was possible, I should be dancing boogie with Sarah right now” he chuckled. Sarah is our grandma.
“Have you ever tried?”
He stopped then said “No”
“Why not?”
“Because lad, I was already contented on how I lived my life. I have no regrets. Besides, I already served my purpose in life”
“What was your purpose?”
A smile spread over his face then he said “To give a wonderful start for my children”
At first, I didn’t get it but as I try to understand it fully he was right. My dad used to say that before grandpa died, he saved a lot of money for his children to use in the future. H e would also say, waving both hands in the air, that everything we had, we owe it to grandpa.
If I was really dead, what was my purpose? Make Hazel’s life miserable? Well that would be bad. Was I contented with the way I lived my life? No, because the last thing I ever said was my sister was the worst. If I understood correctly, when one dies it means he already served his purpose and he dies in a good way. Maybe the whole reason why I’m still breathing is that God will give me a second chance and I should live my life in a good way from now on.
“Grandpa, I haven’t done my purpose in life so I guess I still have a chance to get back. Would you help me?”
“Hmm…maybe you’re right. Fate brought us here together. We’ll find a way to get you back”
Sorry for the late update. I made this chapter very long and I hope you like it.
