As it turned out, they liked the same bands and watched the same shows.  The two actually had a lot in common, much to Phil’s surprise.  A month or two passed and Dan became the closest thing to a best friend he’d ever had.  He liked it—there was finally someone to talk to who understood him and didn't ditch just because he wasn't cared about.  They walked out of school that day still laughing at Dan’s joke about the teacher.  They joked and talked all the way back to Phil’s house finding the time had moved almost too fast.  Time always seemed to move quickly  when he was around Dan.  He was a nice guy who he got on along well with—and he didn’t seem to mean him any harm.

Before they said their goodbyes as they did most days at this point, Dan spoke up.  “I’m going to do something tonight… want in?”  His head filled with a million questions, but ‘yes’ repeated over and over.  It was the first time Dan asked him to hang out, and probably the first anyone had asked him to spend time with them.

“I’d love to, what are we going to do?”

“I wanted to make a small message.  If you don’t want to, I understand.”  Phil felt his heart race a little—he still wasn’t the kind to vandalize anything in the slightest.  He would like to think so, at least.  It looked fun though, and maybe he could put something out so someone else could hear him.  Dan’s spray paint messages and opinions created in permanent markers and chalk got a lot of attention.  Most of it was negative, but everyone at school mused over the vandalism.  People saw it, people understood.

“Where should I meet you?”
