I feel like 90% of my life is awkward anyway because I'm just a shy mess but this is just a whole new level.
My fork scraped again my plate again and I uncomfortably shifted in the seat I was in. This is just great. The three other people at the table glanced up at me and I squirmed in my seat.
I could see Zack holding in a smirk that I would probably smack off of him if his parents weren't sat with us right now.
I'm having dinner with Zacks parents.
"So," Zacks mom started and his step father turned to her with a small glare.
"Don't talk to him love. He shouldn't have got himself and this lovely girl arrested." You may think this was sweet of him to say but I've not actually said two words to him so it's actually kind of weird. His tone was soft and got harder as he spoke, seeming to get more annoyed at Zack.
"So what's your name?" His step dad suddenly turned to me and I dropped my fork in surprise and looked up at him like a deer caught in headlights.
"Uh," fuck, what was my name again? "J-Justice." I cleared my throat afterwards, feeling it painfully dry up. I looked opposite me to Zack again and he was smirking looking down at his food.
"What are you studying in school?" He asked again, completely taking the subject. How do I answer that? I'm studying the same as everyone else, it's the schools programme.
"Everything?" I answered quietly and unsurely. He nodded but when he looked down I saw the roll of his eyes. I picked up my fork and began eating again when I realised he wasn't going to say anything else.
Everything was silent again for a few minutes and I found myself getting a little more comfortable as Zack gave me a small nervous smile.
"What are your grades like?" He asked again suddenly and I dropped my fork. Again. This is just getting embarrassing. I briefly looked at Zack expecting him to be smirking again but he was frowning at his Mom.
I looked to the step dad deciding it wasn't any of my business.
"Uh, average, I guess." I answered honestly. They're not that great considering I went to a private school for however many years but I'm just not the best learner.
"What's average?" He shot back immediately.
"Joseph. Stop now, please." Zacks mom immediately cut in and he smiled politely at her before looking down at him meal and ferociously cutting some chicken. I frowned but covered it quickly, not wanting to be rude. Nothing else was said and I, again, picked up my fork and slowly started eating.
I'm not even in the mood for food right now. I think I preferred the awkward silence.
"Could I be excused?" I asked quietly. Zacks mom nodded but 'Joseph' didn't even look up. "Where's the bathroom?" I asked in the same tone.
Zack stood up and his chair scraped loudly across the floor. "I'll show you." He told me without looking at me.
Joseph looked up then and Zack avoided his gaze beginning to walk away from the table. I scrambled away to follow him, feeling the couples eyes on us both as we left.
We walked in silence up the stairs, past a few closed doors and then he led me straight to the open one. I stepped in only to have him follow me and close the door behind him.
I smiled. "You know what I mean when I say I want to use the bathroom right?" I asked him. He ignored to question and finally looked at me, leaning back on the door and hearing it fully close from the weight of his body.
"I am so sorry. He's such an asshole, fucking-" I felt the need to stop him before he went completely off on an angry rant.
"It's fine. We did get arrested. I can see why they're so angry." He frowned before smiling at me. I could tell it was completely fake though.
"Okay." He replied, still standing against the door. I looked to the toilet briefly before looking back at him, hoping to give him a hint. He continued to stare at me.
"Okay." I said to him in an amused tone. I stared back at him but couldn't keep eye contact because of his blank stare. I tried to give him the same hint as before but I could see that I was getting nowhere.
"Zack?" I asked and he nodded, still with the blank look. "I still need to use the bathroom." I told him but nothing seemed to change as he nodded again. I looked to the door handle and back up to his eyes and saw his eyes widen and his mouth drop open.
There it is.
"Oh, shit, um, sorry. I'll just-" he turned to the door and then turned back to me before opening it. He saw my amused smile before frantically turning back around and opening the door, stepping out before slamming it behind him and loudly muttering, "okay."
I felt the smile on my face as I went over to the toilet to finally pee before I wet myself.
I wished it would've lasted longer though because I really don't want to go back downstairs to that awkward tension.
AN// I missed writing this book. Aw, it's like being reunited with an old friend.
