"Keep up slow poke!" I shouted to Joey via our mind link."Shut it Sawyer. Not my fault your mates a gorilla who growls every time I try and run in line with you two." I grinned at the annoyance in his tone. "This was supposed to be our run anyway. Nobody invited him."
It was true, Lucas forced his invitation. Not that I had minded; my wolf was especially enjoying running along side him. So much confidence radiated off of Lucas's wolf. I could feel the power and if he wasn't my mate I would have been extremely intimidated.
Joey on the other hand did not like getting booted to the back. If it weren't for his wolf sensing Lucas's Alpha power he would have barged to the front as always. Feeling guilty, I made a mental note to run with him alone at some point.
"Aw, someone's jealous." I teased, laughing in wolf form, which out loud sounded somewhere between an awkward cough and a bark. This earned me an inquisitive stare from Lucas. I could tell he was frustrated by our lack of mind link. Most likely because I was able to communicate with another male and not him.
Alphas.
I ignored his look, knowing he would question me about it eventually.
The sun had just set. It was one of my favorite times to run through the forest. The orange light would break through the trees until eventually everything faded to the dark night.
I was always grateful for my enhanced eye sight, being able to see incredible things in the dark. I must have been too focused on the beauty surrounding me to notice what Lucas and Joey apparently had.
Everything happened so quickly.
Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a grey wolf lunging towards me. I suddenly felt a sharp piercing in my side, from what was unmistakably claw marks. I let out a howl as I was shoved out of the way and tackled by Joey.
He kept me firmly underneath him as a fight broke out only a few feet away from us. My mate against whomever attacked.
My eyes clenched shut in pain, but I fought it as my worry for Lucas outweighed everything. When I was finally able to peak around Joey's protective hold I saw my mate standing tall yet breathing heavily in wolf form.
Two dead bodies laid lifelessly at his feet. He managed to kill two wolves in under thirty seconds.
From their retched scent I knew they were rogues.
Lucas growled in our direction, approaching us slowly. Wisely, Joey jumped off of me. I didn't want to know what a riled up alpha would do about another male lying on his mate. Luckily he chose to see if I were okay rather than tear apart my best friend.
Lucas whined as he sniffed the gash in my side. It wasn't so large and it had already begun healing. However the deep red contrasting with my white fur alluded that there had been a lot of blood. I went to stand on all fours but Lucas's head nudged me back down to my lying position. His large tongue lapped at my wound, effectively stopping any excess bleeding. I let out a sigh at the feel, it seemed to cancel out any of the pain.
His snout moved to my neck, nuzzling me before he shifted back to human form. This time he allowed me to stand so I could shift as well. I threw myself in his arms, a lump filling my throat as he held me tightly. He was careful to avoid my wound.
It was the second time my mate, my best friend and I were alone in a dangerous situation. I glanced at Joey who also had shifted back, yet was looking around the area.
"You're okay baby." Lucas cooed, running his fingers through as my hair.
"I wasn't paying attention. I- they came out of no where. I-"
