An EMT finally appeared in the apartment doorway, carrying a medical bag. The officer immediately waved him over.
"Knife wound. Upper arm."
Jughead almost laughed.
That was apparently him now.
Knife wound.
Mr. Knife wound.
He let the EMT sit beside him and start unwrapping Betty's bandage while his attention remained stubbornly fixed on the other side of the room.
On Betty.
On the child.
On the sentence she'd never finished.
Not Archie's.
The EMT peeled back the blood-soaked gauze.
"Well, that's unpleasant."
"Glad you're here to provide the professional opinion," Jughead muttered.
The EMT snorted.
"You're lucky."
"So I've been told."
The EMT started cleaning the wound properly. This time the sting hit hard enough that Jughead winced.
Across the room, the little girl noticed immediately.
Her eyes widened.
"Mommy, he got an owie." Several officers failed to suppress smiles and Betty covered her mouth briefly.
"Yeah, sweetheart."
The girl frowned.
"Does he need a sticker?"
The EMT barked out a laugh.
Jughead stared.
"A sticker?"
The little girl nodded seriously.
"Stickers help." She gasped, turning to face Betty. "Can I give him one of mine?"
"Uh..." Betty turned to the officers who gave her a small nod. "Sure, yeah. Let's go get one."
"Okay!" Julia climbed down from her lap and already started tugging her toward her room before Betty even fully got up.
"Slow down, honey. Be careful."
While they disappeared in another room, the EMT started to wrap up upper his arm.
"This needs stitches."
"No," Jughead protested immediately and the man sighed.
"The cut will probably heal on its own but it will be better if-"
"I'm not going to the hospital."
"Here!" The girl yelled while running back — now wearing some pants and socks under her nightgown. In one hand, she held a booklet with a colorful cover.
"I've got a lot of stickers in here," She announced while walking between Jughead's legs to show him her stickers. She flipped through the few pages, letting him see the stickers.
"Okay, which one do you want?" She asked once she was through them all and Jughead selected one.
"This one," He said, pointing to a green gummy bear. Julia gasped.
"Oh, I got that one from my- doctor, when I got... a..." She turned to her mother for help and Betty smiled softly.
"A vaccine."
