CHAPTER 8
Monday at school was tense, well, before going to school was tense - to me anyway. I was about to get in the car to drive us to school when I just happened to look over and find the three Silverstone siblings getting on their Harley-Davidson's.
Xavier was about to get on his bike when he pauses, searching my eyes for a split second before he puts his helmet on his head and starts the engine. I avert my gaze and step into the car. I turn the ignition on and call for Ruby and Ky to get in the car as they are having a quick chat with the other Silverstone's, when they didn't listen to me the first time, I raise my voice.
"Ruby, Kyanite. Get in the damn car, now!"
Ky and Ruby shoot me alarmed looks but abandon their attempts at a quick hello to Comet and Linton. Looks like their outing went well. I wait until the rumbling of three motorcycle engines drift away before reversing out of the driveway.
To say that was tense was an understatement, I had to resist from making my car an electrical charged moving box; the radio was static, I could feel my fingers tingle. I took deep breathes all the way to school. Ky and Ruby give me quick goodbyes before we go our separate ways to our respective campuses on the school lot. My eyes move at their own accord to my left and find three black and silver; shiny, sleek Harleys casually resting in three parking spaces.
What I wouldn't give to not be at school right now.
I open the doors to the entrance of the school and I am graciously rewarded with the eyes of my best friend. Seeing Lilly brightens up my glum mood.
"Oh, Lilly! Am I glad to see you!"
Lilly's eyes furrow. "Sapphire, you sound like you haven't seen me in a week. We saw each other two days ago."
I shrug. "You're my best friend...so of course I'd miss you."
Lilly smiles, "Well, glad that you missed me because..."
I turn to Lilly and narrow my eyes suspiciously. "Because what?"
Lilly meekly smiles, the next words that come out are fast almost merging together. "Because... I'm going to Italy for three weeks for a vacation with my Aunt Lisa."
My eyes go wide. "What!" She can't leave me! Not now.
Lilly winces at the volume of my voice, she quickly glances around, some students have stopped to stare but Lilly grabs my elbow and pulls me into a semi-private corner of the lockers.
"Sapphire, it'll be fine. I'll be back before you know it."
What am I going to do without her? She's my only friend.
"When do you leave?"
Lilly sighs. "Next Monday,"
My voice rises again. "Next Monday?!"
Lilly shushes me. "Shush, Sapphire, stop! Keep your voice down!"
"I'm sorry! I'm just going to miss you that's all. At least we'll have a week before you leave,"
Lilly smiles warmly and touches my shoulder. "Yeah, we will. I'll miss you too, Saph, don't worry about me, I'll be fine. I'll be living in a townhouse in the Italian Wine Valley. It's so cool!" Her voice raises, her expression showing excitement.
I smile, happy for Lilly. She's really excited.
"What made your Aunt want to take a vacation at the start of the year?" I say.
Lilly shrugs. "I don't know. Maybe she wanted to get away, she was very busy last year. She asked me along and I said yes." She sure has the money for it.
