CHAPTER 4
It's early morning when I wake up and I hear my parents moving around the kitchen, preparing the food.
I step out of my bed and head to the bathroom, bleary-eyed and my hair a mess. I step into the bathroom and groan when I find my hair is much worse then I thought, it looks like a birds nest.
"Great," I mumble, my voice husky from sleep.
I undress and step into the shower, splashing water on my face to wake me up. I wash my hair with my favourite shampoo and conditioner, smelling the apple flavoured aroma that surrounds me, letting out a relaxed sigh. The aroma calms me enough to not freak out about my parents embarrassing me. I swear one of these days I'm gonna die of embarrassment.
I finish having my shower and step out; I wrap myself and my hair in a towel and walk slowly to my bedroom. I shut my door and find that my blinds a still shut; normally Mum comes in and opens them.
Don't worry, I don't have my blinds open all the time, it's just with no-one living next door for more than a year, and the only way you could see in my room is through the bedroom adjacent to mine. I hadn't the need to open them, now I'm glad they're closed, I kinda forgot that someone lives opposite me now.
I look through my closet and find some blue skinny jeans and a wife-beater. It was a warm day. I let my hair out, blow-dry it and leave it out, my blonde-blue-streaked hair framing my shoulders and put my contacts in my light-honey brown eyes.
I put my red converses on and head outside, I trump down the stairs hearing my mother and father arguing about how long the tuna casserole should be in the oven for. I step inside the kitchen and my eyes widen in surprise as I find dishes and dishes of every food imaginable, lying on the granite table top.
My mum looks at me, her cheeks flushed. "Oh Sapphire! There you are! Can you help your father put some of these dishes out in the front yard?"
I nod and turn towards my father who is holding more dishes of something that I can't describe and nods silently to some others that are waiting to be taken outside. I follow my father with some dishes and make sure that I don't trip over the front step of the house. I place the plates down on the tables provided. The block party is in full swing and it's only eight-thirty in the morning.
There are two jumping castles that are situated in the middle of our neighbourhood, the space almost looks like a small football field and there are kids jumping and chasing each other around the place, their squeals fill the air.
Our neighbourhood is sort of a large cul-de-sac with houses facing each other etc, so most of the neighbours are friends and this is why my family has started this tradition of 'block parties'. Some of the kids that I go to school with have parents that come to this annual gathering.
It was one of the things that I hated about my parents, they knew all the parents in this neighbourhood and in turn, the peers that go to my school, whose parents know my parents, knew who my parents were and that results in my hellish time at school. Hense, why I will die of embarrasment. Again.
I turn around and start to head for the front door of my house when I casually look up to my right and find the new neighbours house is alive in the day as well as it is in the night. I see the older looking sibling that I acknowledged in the cafeteria giving me the dangerous look from yesterday and I meet his eyes for a second, raise my eyebrows and smirk - challenging him - telling him that he doesn't scare me. He breaks our contact but not before I see a spark of surprise in his blue eyes.
Make something of that mysterious guy.
I step inside my house and find the area is full of people that I know and don't, probably mum and dad's friends.
