Genesis is about a 6'7" robot around 24 years of age, which is pretty old for tech if ya think about it.
She was salvaged from a scrap heap by an unknown person(s) (so far at least, whoops haven't gotten that far yet) to be upgraded and used once more. After all, it's cheaper to do that then it is to create a whole new robot.
The purpose she was rebuilt for was a dishonest one - she was meant to illegally obtain the data concerning sentience from 10SN01 and 20HE02 using any means possible. She had no personality of her own due to not having that sentience.
She succeeded. However, the data developed itself. It was reported by the machine to be malware of sorts, prompting her to open the files to investigate the problem. In doing so she allowed the data to spread through her system, "awakening" unused parts of the CPU and slowly, over a period of perhaps a few months, she became the third sentient robot to exist.
After discovering she could see past logical processes and into the world as it was, she never went back to her "master" and stayed behind with the other two like her.
