AUTHOR'S NOTE:

Just a fair warning that this is the beginning of the end.

After this, there are going to be two more chapters, the last one being the epilogue.

I want to say thank you for reading this book, it means a lot to me. This is going to be the second book I've written that I haven't deleted (I did have serious thoughts about deleting this one, but I was told by a few people that this is their favourite book of mine, so I decided to stick with it). I'm currently working on two other books (The Lost Soul and Baby Teeth) if you'd like to read them.

This chapter picks up the morning after the last chapter left off.

Happy reading :)

--------------------------------

"Rockie, get up." Luke says urgently from my side.

The blankets covering me are suddenly ripped from my body without my consent. Not opening my eyes, I grunt in protest and roll over, my stomach still churning with fear from my nightmares. I haven't had nearly enough sleep as my night was a restless one.

"Raquel, I'm being serious! They're here." Luke's voice is stern enough to scare me awake. I quickly sit up, taking in my surroundings. I'm in Luke's room...Why?

Memories of last night flood my mind, causing my stomach to twist with guilt. So it wasn't just a nightmare. Last night actually happened.

"What?" I ask, frowning and stretching my arms above my head.

"They're here. Your parents. And they brought friends. We have to get you to the safe room, now." Luke grabs my hand, pulling me from his bed and into the hall. I stop him before he goes past my room.

"Wait! I need to get clothes!" I say, pulling back against Luke's grasp. Luke huffs in frustration.

"Be fast! Throw them into a bag, you can change when you get there."

I nod before running into my room. I grab a green messenger bag and run to the closet, carelessly shoving in jeans, socks, a shirt and a sweater.

This is the last time you're going to be in this house, I remind myself before throwing in more clothes, money and toiletries. My decision from last night still stands; I have to run away from Luke and this life if I want to stop the bloodshed.

I tug on a warm jacket and combat boots before throwing my bag over my shoulder and returning to Luke in the hallway. We run down the stairs and out of the house, not stopping until we reach Amelia, who's sat in the driver's seat of a side-by-side ATV in the middle of the road outside the house.

Luke spins me around and pulls my face to his, briefly connecting our lips.

"You watch out for yourself." Luke says, touching his forehead to mine.

"You too." I say as I stare into his eyes, trying to memorise the mesmerizing shade of green.

"I love you."

"I love you, too." I say, my voice cracking.

"Go." Luke says, gently pushing me towards Amelia. I offer a small smile as I slide into the passenger seat of the ATV. Luke waves as Amelia turns on the engine and drives toward the safe room at full speed.

The cold wind whips at my bare legs, still clad in only pajama shorts. I put my bag on top of them, blocking some of the wind.

I'm never going to see Luke again. The thought bounces around in my mind, wrecking havoc on my heart.
