Story:
Taennie
Jennie Kim grew up in an orphanage with no memory of where she truly came from. She learned early that people leave, love fades, and survival depends on not needing anyone. So she built a life around control becoming a disciplined yoga instructor, calm on the outside, but always keeping emotional distance. To her, independence was not a choice. It was protection.
Kim Taehyung died on a night that was never meant for him. Three months before his death, an anonymous leak exposed a hidden criminal network involved in illegal financial records tied to powerful families. One of those families had a single unresolved thread left from the past a child who had been quietly erased from records years ago. That child was Jennie. When Jennie was abandoned at the orphanage, it was not only neglect. It was also concealment. Her existence was the final link to evidence that could expose the truth behind a long-buried financial scandal involving inheritance fraud, identity manipulation, and political influence. Years later, someone discovered that the "missing child" might still be alive and they decided she needed to disappear permanently.
The original plan was simple: locate Jennie, isolate her, and eliminate her before she could be identified or questioned but Jennie changed her routine that night. She was supposed to attend a scheduled yoga collaboration event at a private venue tied to the investigation. Instead, she stayed home. Taehyung, unknowingly connected through a separate chain of misinformation involving Seoyeon, arrived at the location instead. The killers assumed he was the person interfering with their operation and so, Taehyung became the mistake that fate did not correct. He died without ever knowing Jennie existed.
When Taehyung awakens as a ghost, no one can see him. Not his family. Not his former lover, Seoyeon. Not the world that once adored him. Until he meets Jennie. For reasons neither of them understands, Jennie is the only person who can see and hear him. At first, she believes she is hallucinating but slowly, she realizes he is real just no longer alive. Their connection begins with irritation. Arguments. Silences filled with reluctant companionship. He follows her into her structured life like a disturbance she cannot remove. She becomes the only place he can exist and neither of them admits that loneliness is what keeps pulling them closer.
As they investigate the truth behind Taehyung's death, Seoyeon reappears in the story. Once Taehyung's girlfriend, Seoyeon was not the mastermind, but she was involved indirectly trading information with people she believed were harmless investors. She never intended murder. She only wanted money to escape her own failing life. But her decisions became one of the threads that led the killers to Taehyung on the wrong night. Guilt consumes her when she realizes the truth because Taehyung was never the target. Jennie was.
The deeper Jennie and Taehyung dig, the more the past begins to surface. Jennie's orphanage records are partially falsified. Her birth identity is linked to the same family involved in the financial scandal. Her existence represents proof that inheritance documents were manipulated decades ago, threatening to collapse everything the perpetrators built. Taehyung's death was not random. It was a displacement. A life taken in place of another. A mistake the system never corrected and because of that mistake, Jennie is still alive and Taehyung is not.
While Jennie slowly falls in love with him, she never confesses. Not once. She smiles more when he is near. She talks a little longer than before. She starts waiting for his voice in empty rooms but she tells herself the truth: He is already gone and loving him would only make losing him unbearable. So she keeps it inside her heart, where no one not even a ghost can hear it.
One afternoon, everything changes. Jennie's pet suddenly runs onto the road. She follows without thinking. Taehyung sees the car too late. There is impact. Silence and then hospital lights. Jennie survives, but she does not wake immediately. Taehyung sits beside her the entire time. Trying to reach her. Trying to call her name. Trying to do anything a living person could do but he cannot. For the first time, he breaks completely. Not because he is dead but because she might live without him and he cannot follow her there
When Jennie finally wakes, she sees him. Still sitting there. Still watching her. She smiles faintly and says nothing about how close she came to not returning because some fears are easier to keep unspoken.
Eventually, the truth is exposed. The criminals are arrested. Seoyeon's role is revealed. Jennie's identity is confirmed and Taehyung finally understands why he remained: Not because he was meant to stay but because fate had unfinished math to correct. He was never supposed to die for Jennie but he did and in doing so, he became the only thread connecting her to the truth. As his presence begins to fade, neither of them confesses. Not Jennie. Not Taehyung. They simply exist in the quiet space between knowing and saying. On his last day, he looks at her longer than usual. She avoids his eyes for the first time because if she looks too long, she might break and if she breaks, she might speak and if she speaks, she might lose him twice. So she stays silent and so does he.
Years later, rain falls over a quiet street. Jennie leaves a café, lost in thought, when she bumps into a stranger. He apologizes politely. She freezes. There is something familiar about him. Not memory. Not certainty. Just recognition without proof. The stranger smiles. A soft, familiar expression she cannot place.
"Have we met before?"
Jennie does not answer immediately. She only smiles small, unreadable, and calm. Then the stranger's phone rings, and he disappears into the crowd before she can respond. Jennie stands alone beneath the rain. ut for the first time in a long while, she does not feel empty. Only uncertain. As if something unfinished has quietly begun again.
