Begining of The Inevitable ( || )

I ran for what felt like hours on end. My chest was heaving, my knees were weak and my cheeks were flushed. God, I needed a drink.

My instant thought was to run to Rin's dorm room but he'd probably just think I was overreacting or he would go out and try and kill someone. Either way, it was best just to go to my own room.

I entered the building as silently as I could, trying not to tell either of them I was back. I brought all of my purchases into my room and sat them on the end of my bed, sprawling out on it myself.

"What a fucking day," I said aloud.

"'Sup?"

"SHIT! Rin, you gave me the fright of my life," I said, my hairs sticking up on end. I was feeling pretty on edge after the whole creepy situation.

"What's wrong with you?" He questioned.

"Ah, nothing that really matters. I was just out getting some presents and you scared me."

"Are you sure? You're not sick, are you? You're kinda pale. Want me to get Yukio?"

"No, I'm fine. Can I just have a little peace, please," I said but not rudely, more exasperatedly.

"Sure, call me if you need me," Rin smiled and went back into his own room.

I tried to remain peaceful and calm myself down by taking some candles and going for a nice bath. I let myself relax in the water as it was pretty nice and warm.

"Is that...scratching? Kuro, are you in here?"

Silence again.

"Please, whoever is there, just come out..." I pleaded with no one, praying that it was just a prank.

"(Y/N), you're the key," it whispered.

"I-I'm the what?!" I shrieked, getting out of the tub and wrapping myself in my dressing gown. Never in my life had I felt so defenceless. I was looking around the room, in every corner, just to see if I could see anything. There was an omnipresent spirit I could tell.

"The key. The key. The key," it chanted.

"Please! Stop!" I screamed, feeling like I was being suffocated on oxygen.

"THE KEY. THE KEY. YOU ARE THE KEY. COME. YOU ARE MY KEY."

"STOP, I'M BEGGING YOU!"

"What the fuck is going on in here?!"

"Show yourself!"

Rin and Yukio must have heard me shouting. As soon as they entered the room, the presence disappeared. What the fuck was going on?

"So you say that when you were out earlier, you felt like you could hear someone saying your name?"

"Yes. I'm more than certain something was saying my name."

"And then when you were in the bathroom, you heard scratching and a voice telling you that you were 'the key'?"

"Yes, god damn it, Yukio! How many times does she have to repeat herself?!"

"Rin, this would be a whole lot easier if you just calmed down."

"Calm down?! What do you mean calm down? Someone is after my girlfriend. I won't let anyone or anything touch her!" Rin said, gripping onto my shoulders forcefully.

"Rin, it's ok. I'm with you guys now. The presence dispatched as soon as you entered. Do you have a verdict, Yukio?" I asked hopefully.

"I cannot say anything for certain at this point. It seems as though we're dealing with a spirit but I cannot be sure until more things happen. And if you say the presence didn't dispatch until Rin and I came into contact, then it must be after you for some reason. I'll need to speculate on it for a little longer. This whole 'key' thing seems to be important. Do you know what it was talking about?"

I tried to rack my brain for anything that could spurt out an answer. I honestly couldn't think of anything that would make this whole mess make sense. Everything just seemed so detached from reality.

"I honestly couldn't tell you, Yukio. I'm just really scared. I don't think I even want to find out what it means."

"Okay. It's getting late, you should probably go back into your room."

"I'm sleeping with you," Rin said in a matter of fact tone.

"Okay, I'll feel much safer that way," I smiled up at him and headed to my room. I removed all of the stuff I had bought from my shopping trip from my bed and put on my pyjamas.

"(Y/N), can we talk?"

"Course. What's up?"

"I'm really scared for you. I don't know what to do. Is there anything you want me to do for you? I just don't want to lose you," he said, staring out of my moonlit window.

"Rin, all I need is you and you alone. Please don't worry about me. I'll be safe if I'm with you."

"Heck yeah you will! Nothing is touching you. Apart from me, that is," he smirked.

"It's a school night, goodnight, Rin," I said as I turned off the lamp.

"Night," he murmured as he nuzzled into my back.

[In dreamland]

My body was frighteningly warm and burning. Everything was sort of hazy, but I knew I was looking up at a blood red sky. Tears were clouding my vision. As I went to wipe them away to get a better view, I could see my own blood covered hands.

"The key, the key," more chants filled the air around me.

Hands grabbed onto my body and pulled me into the hummocky, dried up earth. The chants got louder and louder, scars on my body grew deeper and deeper. I screamed out for help.

"(Y/N)!" I heard someone shout in the distance. I tried to clear my hazy eyes.

Rin was standing over Yukio's dead body, flames lit and sword unsheathed.

Then I felt a jolt.

[Back to Earthland]

"(Y/N)! (Y/N), wake up! Stop this!" Rin shouted, trying to get me up.

"H-Huh, what happened?" I said, crying silent tears.

"You were thrashing about and shouting and screaming, I couldn't wake you up. What happened?"

"Oh, Rin..."
