Proposition

The red sky was perhaps the most prominent feature of the area.

Ruins scattered across a plain field. It looked as if derelict buildings had been knocked down and left to rot. Many makings of small fires dotted themselves in random locations.

The stench was undeniably nauseating. Rotting flesh, sulphur, blood. Like nothing I'd ever had the misfortune of smelling before.

There was an eerie sound of shouting, despite there not being many people around. Screams came every few minutes, neither far nor near. The rustle of small coal tars filled my ears. There were too many to even fathom.

Insects and beasts crawled on the disgusting ground. Some coming near me and trying to bite, others nestled in a pile together. It was truly revolting.

My perception of time was completely meddled with. Was it day or night? Spring or winter? How long had I been here for? When did I get here?

Despite the horrendous surroundings, I carried myself through the ruins, seeking some sort of human activity.

Although I knew I never would get that.

Because I must have been in Gehenna.

Who could say how long I'd been travelling for? I felt like I'd seen some roads at least ten times. Every single step was filled with the same rotting smell, dirty ruins and blood. Until, one point I heard a rustle in a nearby bush of thorns.

"(Y/N), (Y/N), (Y/N)," the figure chanted over and over. I looked at what appeared to be a small demon, trying to usher me in a certain direction. If it was leading me to my inevitable fate, I didn't even care. I just wanted to stop walking around in circles.

I followed the demon and it seemed to take a different route than I. In the distance, there was a sort of temple type building. Outside was lined with 6 massive pillars and a pentagram shape could be seen on the ground. It wasn't hard to guess what I was here for.

Demons started at me and launched themselves at me as I walked through the plains. I didn't have my sword with me, nor any summoning paper so I wasn't able to do anything. However, the demon guiding me formed a force field around my body, not letting any of the other demons touch me.

We came to a halt at the satanic building. The demon seemed to disappear into thin air and all of a sudden, a ghastly presence washed over my senses.

"It appears I've finally got the pleasure of meeting you."

The voice was unexplainable. With a mix of aggressiveness, assertiveness, authority and slight seduction. Nothing could truly describe what the feeling was. The closest word to it would be fear.

Pure, raw, unintelligible fear.

"W-Who ar-"

"Oh, don't pretend you don't know what this is. I'm Satan, here for you. I have a proposition."

Proposition? What the heck did that mean? Of all things, surely he wasn't a reasonable guy, just like Yukio said. What was bugging me was that I couldn't actually see him, he just seemed to be there.

"What does that entail?"

"Me having Rin. He needs to come back here."

"Why?"

"You know, since you're talking to the ruler of the underworld, I really wouldn't start talking back."

"It sounds like you need me, so I severely doubt you'll kill me. And if you do, I wouldn't reject the offer, because I've seen too much being here."

"My, my. You're an intelligent girl. More intelligent than you may seem. I need Rin for sacrificial and power purposes. You're going to be the one to send him here."

Sacrificial? Okay, it's clearly obvious that he's a mad man, but why does he need him for sacrificial purposes? What ritual would require Rin being here?

"What does the ritual need Rin for?"

"Why, he is my son. All sons must be present. I'm going to resurrect somebody."

"A resurrection?"

"Yes. The resurrection of Lucifer."

Call me crazy, but aren't Satan and Lucifer the same person? Exorcist school never really went over this. And also, if he needed all of his sons there, why not Yukio?

"You realise that I would never hand him over."

"Oh, but you will. You see, I've got your brother and all of your friends on constant watch by my demons in Assiah. Exorcists in training or not, the demons are too strong to be defeated. You will send Rin here. I am going to lend you my power to do so."

Lend me his power...?

Surely he couldn't mean the blue flames.

"Yes, the blue flames. And the power to come and go from Assiah to Gehenna. Normally this is a demon only trait, so I should make you into one. But it doesn't suit you. I'll just let the power devour you when I'm done."

Was there anything I could do to stop this now? Stop myself from inheriting his power? I wouldn't be able to control it, not being emotionally stable enough.

Suddenly, I felt a surge of power go through me, engulfing me in blue. How could I stop this now? There was nothing I could do.

"I'll be expecting Rin here in a few months. Until then, don't go sparking up, you'll probably be killed. You'll know when you're supposed to come."

With that, I felt like I just woke up from a dream. I found myself in Rin's arms, shaking and dizzy. He looked right into my eyes and I could see that he was asking me if I was okay, I just couldn't hear him.

All I could hear was my own thoughts.

I inherited the power that was once used to kill my family.

Rin's power.
