Chapter Five: Iris’ POV

It was as if North was trying to make my life difficult. He got along with every single one of my family members. Except me. He made fun of me, made every task much more difficult than it needed to be and made sure that every morning we were running late. Just because he knew it was my biggest pet peeve.

“Yo rule Nazi, we better get going if we’re going to be on time,” North hollered from the kitchen.

I grit my teeth from room, “Shut up! I’m coming.”

With papers in my hand, I flung down the stairs in a flash. I hadn’t had time to do my home work last night with North’s music blasting next door.

North looked at the blank homework in my hand and feigned horror, putting a hand over his mouth, “Homework undone? How dare!”

“I said shut up.”

“Let’s go, hurry up,” he mimicked me.

I shuffled around the kitchen grabbing everything I needed, “I’m ready.”

He scoffed.

As soon as we got into the car, he lit his stupid cigarette and rolled down the window.

“Can you not?” I asked.

His only response was to raise an eyebrow back at me.

“The cig,” I waved my hand in his direction, “Don’t smoke in my car, please.”

He clenched his jaw, but put it out.

“Thank you.”

He didn’t respond. I was used to this by now though.

Softly I heard a phone buzz, and out of the corner of my eye I saw North take out his phone. I could see my mom’s name flash across the screen. Instead of looking happy, and answering the text, North just clenched his jaw and slid his phone back into his pocket.

“Edwell Assassins starts today,” I informed him.

“Excuse me?” he asked without turning around.

"Edwell Assassins. It's a game that the upper class plays. Each person is assigned people to 'assassin' from the rival school, and is assigned a teammate from this school randomly also. Together you try to shoot your target with a water gun, before the weeks up. If you get them, and don't get shot, you move to the next week. There's a bunch of rules, but it's fun. My mom signed you up," I say, not taking my eyes off the road.

“So, I’m going to be running around town with some random person, “ he deadpanned.
