The girl in front of me was gorgeous. She had long curly brown hair that went to her chest. Her skin that wasn't too light, nor too dark. It was a natural tan that everyone would die for. Her eyes were a deep milk chocolate that seemed to be a dark abyss, as well as a melting smile. She was wearing just a touch of makeup, but in her mind it made a difference. She was wearing a white skater dress that came to just above her knee; there was a pink floral design on it. She was also wearing brown boots with a belt to match. The girl in front of me was beautiful. She looked nothing like me; yet as I smiled at the mirror so did she.

"Are you sure?" I asked Chloe, my best friend, as I took another look in the mirror.

"Taylor, this is the third time you've changed. You are wearing this to the party!" she huffed.

"But you actually look cute," I said, looking at her perfectly curled blonde hair that framed her clear pale face. She was wearing contacts in place of her usual oversized nerdy glasses. For the party she was wearing a short and curve hugging red dress that looked gorgeous on her. It was simple, but bold at the same time.

"I'd better. It's my sixteenth birthday," she said with a wide smile, showing off her dimples. "Oh hey! People are here!" she exclaimed when the doorbell rang.

"Can I just stay up here and read a book or something?" I asked nervously as I finally registered that other people were here.

"Come on," she said, grabbing my hand and dragging me out of her room to the stairs. "People are waiting."

"Why am I doing this again?" I asked out loud, mainly to myself, when we reached the bottom of the stairs.

"Because you're my best friend!" she said, turning her back to me and opening the door. Girl after girl came pouring inside, wishing Chloe birthday wishes and asking where to put her presents. I greeted them awkwardly and started to wish that I had never come downstairs in the first place. These girls and the people that would come afterwards were more of Chloe's friends. While I'm not a 'nerd,' I'm also not popular like her. I'm not even normal; I'm just there. I'm not a loner; I have a lot of friends, but Chloe is one of my only friends that I actually see outside of school. She's also my closest and longest friend so far. She's not perfect, but I love her, and I'm willing to do anything for her. Even wear a dress and be in party with people I mostly dislike. I don't know why I dislike them, I mean Chloe shows that there are great popular people, but I have a bad history with them so I try to keep my distance.

The party isn't like something that you would see in a movie - no hundreds of people, solo cups everywhere, drunk people and people making out, but it was close enough that I tried my best not to attract attention. Her house was pretty big, and there was some drinks and blaring music, but the party itself was pretty tame. There would be almost no reason for anyone to call the cops to come. I didn't really do a good job of being invisible, apparently, because I tripped and bumped into someone. A group of guys began to look at me and whisper within themselves. Even after I apologized to the person and quickly walked away, they continued to stare at me. It, for some reason, gave me the chills.

I wanted to go to Chloe, but she was cuddling with her boyfriend Max and talking to a bunch of her friends. She was out and my phone was dying, so I decided to go to her room and read a book like I wanted to before. Her room was pretty normal sized, considering the size of her house. The walls were teal, and her bed sheets matched, but that was where the theme stopped. Everything else was a bunch of other colors like blue curtains, white dressers and more, but in the end it all came together and looked great. The thing that I really was interested in was her bookshelf. It was flooded with so many different types of books. It had almost every genre and it even had some stories that she wrote in her notebook and let me tell you, they are amazing. Basically it was my heaven ha ha. I scanned the rows of books looking for anything new or interesting. I even got up on chair to see if there was anything good at the top shelf. I'm not that short, I like to refer to myself as average. I gave up and decided to read one of my favorite series, The Mortal Instruments, again by starting with the first book - The City of Bones.

I was just about to pull it out when the door that I'm pretty sure was locked slowly opened. I looked at the person in confusion for a moment, trying to figure out who it was.

My eyes widened."Nate?" I asked, shocked
