The End of the Beginning

Chapter 21

    I pinched myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Totally awake. When he saw me standing he pulled away. He whispered something into Piper's ear, causing her to give a seductive smile and walk away.

"Kathleen," the prince said. I narrowed my eyes at him. I turned my back before fully facing him.

"No," I scowled.

"Kathleen why are you upset this is how a selection works?" he asked anger rising.

"Because I worked hard to plan a date and I come to see you making out with Piper!"

"Kathleen I gave her a simple kiss and you will not judge me!" Ahren definitely had a temper and it was steaming.

"Fine then let's go on this date," I mumbled taking step toward the stairs.

"I think you have some apologizing to do!"

"I'm sorry," I mumbled.

"You know Kathleen if I were you I'd be a little more careful and all."

"What do you mean?" I asked dumbfounded.

"Well you are talking to a prince about to pick the Elite." I froze. I totally forgot. This entire thing. Now I'm really feeling dumb. "Your dismissed," he mumbled and walked away. I let a tear slip down my beet red cheek. I wasn't going to cry though. I wasn't going to do anything. An apology would be good, but it may be too late. At least I could try . . .

Dear Ahren,

I'm really sorry. Over these two months I've gotten to know you and I'm so happy for that. Your a lot of preferred things. Nice, funny, kind, caring. I'm dearly sorry I upset you. I guess I got in my head forgetting that you had the power to do anything really. I guess I pushed you beyond your limit and without thinking put myself in a bad situation. I don't want you to think of this as a letter requesting you to pick me as an Elite. I definitely for want that. I want you too pick whoever you think is best for you. I want you to think of this as an apology letter. Because that's what it is. I hope I don't leave the palace with you having anger towards me.

    As I fold the letter I let a tear slip onto it. This is the end. In just a few hours I'll be gone. As sad as I was overall I'm thankful. Not many girls get the chance to meet the prince. Even the girls that left the first day I'd consider lucky. I walked through the gardens watching as the leaves lost there bright green, Autumn taking it's way. 26 days until Halloween. I had spent little time dreaming about a handmade costume, candy at every turn, and amazing party. There had yet to be a birthday. Everything went by so fast. I sat down on a bench timidly humming. I carried the small tune and started softly singing the song my dad taught me. It brought me to a better place. Especially when the reality of a five hit me all those years ago. I almost sang myself asleep. When I realized how tired I was I went straight to my room. I decided to write a letter. One last.

Dear Kendall,

I'm probably home now. Please don't show this to anyone though. Someone went down with the prince today. We had a fight but he's . . . easily angered. The elite are being chosen. I don't even know why writing this. It's pointless. I hope everything at hope  was good. I'm sorry I couldn't do better. I guess I'm a three now but there's no way I'm leaving. I really am. I'll be with you guys real soon. I don't know what else to say. I'm sorry.

    Now I was full on crying. Not because of me leaving but the thought that I failed my family. Leaving to but now they don't get pension and I'll go live as a three. When a knock on my door came I jumped. I quickly wiped my face and answered, "come in."

In walked Charlotte, Delilah, and Rachel. When they saw the remains of my tear stained face they looked shocked.

"Dear what happened?" Charlotte kindly asked. I explained the entire story to them and someone we ending up on my bed them comforting me.

"Well there's only one thing we can do," Delilah stated. I gave her a confused look.

"Make him realize what he's losing."

My makeup was light, but bold. My hair was side parted and pulled into a high bun giving the effect of side bangs. The dress was the best part. The red fabric was tightly pulled around the around the strapless bodice and then fell outwards the the floor. (a/n: did that make sense?!?) It was regal and powerful. Perfect. My heels were only an inch higher than usual, but they completed the look. After adding a heeled necklace with earring and a hairpiece to match my maids all whispered, "good luck," and I was off to go. As I made my way down the stairs girls everywhere were whispering. I saw what some were waring, people caked makeup. Piper looked smug, Angelica looked like she was going to cry. When I found my friends I sighed.

"This place is a mess," I joked. Lyla and Isabella just somberly nodded.

"What's wrong?" I asked. They just frowned.

"You know your going to make it," Lyla replied.

"Something happened with the prince earlier and I actually don't think I-"

"You know you'll make it Kathleen! Ever since your first date you knew! He's in love with you and so is the country! There's no doubt!" Lyla stormed of pissed. I looked and Isabella and she just frowned.

"Sorry," she quickly stated and scurried away. Now I was alone.

"Hello Ladies, may I please have your attention," Ahren called, "it had honestly been a pleasure having you all with me these past two months. Getting to know you all was a great experience that not lots of people get. Even though your all lovely ladies . ." He paused scanning the room. "I'm sad to say tonight I'll be choosing the ladies of the Elite."

A/N: The filer game is so strong right now though. I know I haven't updated in so long, but if you read my other selection story (A Love Like Theirs) you know I have writers block. But anyway it's a new chapter so yayy! Also thanks for like almost 4k (I think?) Ily a anyone who reads<3 (even if you hate it :p) Also now things are gonna get exciting so I'll want to update more. Expect: More drama, Ahren's POV (yaasss), and less filer. Also Halloween, a birthday, and . . . Visitors Day in the palace. Hehehe Kaden and Kylie (:0) But be aware I start school reallyyy soon (cries)
