Was I ready? Well, too late now. We both leaned in--

"How are your cones, my dears?" Vicky asked walking into the dining area. Jacob and I leapt away from each other. My face turned bright red and so did Jacob's. Vicky made a noise of surprise. "Oh, I'm so sorry." she said quietly walking back into the kitchen. I didn't look at Jacob for a while. I felt like I was so close to kissing Jacob again, and then it was yanked away from me. Again.

After some awkward silence, I said, "Do you wanna go to my house?" Jacob's face was still slightly red, but he nodded his head avoiding my gaze.

We walked out of the store and headed back up the street towards my house. As soon as we stepped through my front door, my mother greeted me with a huge hug.

"Hello, sweetie!" she said kissing my forehead. She looked at Jacob. "Hi Jacob," Jacob smiled at her.

"Hi Mrs. Jone." he said nodding at her. She looked back at me.

"How was your first day?" she asked.

"It was great! I made new friends." I said grinning.

"Awesome! Why are you two home so late?" she asked.

Jacob and I looked at each other. I knew that he was thinking about the almost kiss too.

"We went to get ice cream." Jacob said looking at my mom. She smiled.

"We're going upstairs." I said. She nodded her head.

"Have fun!" she yelled after us as we went up the stairs. "But not too much fun!" My face burned with embarrassment as we closed my door to my room.

"Sorry about my mom," I said. He smiled.

"Nah, she's cool. For a mom, that is." he said sitting on my bed. I giggled.

There was silence. I didn't want to talk about what happened--or should I say what almost happened--at the shop. Jacob didn't seem to notice, though.

"About the shop..." he started off. I looked at him, guilt in my face.

"Nothing happened." I said quietly. He looked up into my eyes. I could tell he wanted a different answer.

"Ya," he said reluctantly. "But--"
"Jacob," I said cutting him off. "I'm not ready..." He blushed and nodded his head. "I like being friends with you so much. I don't want to lose you."

He smiled, but I could tell that he wanted more from me than just friendship. "You're my best friend, Alice."

I smiled. "Wanna watch funny Vines?"

He nodded his head. "Ya, that sounds awesome."

We watched Vines the rest of the night.
