I think about my life and what has come up to this moment. I'm graduating from high school and my life has flashed before my life. I remember being just a little girl thinking that going into middle school was going to be tough, and now I'm going into college to become a journalist.
But before I go to college, there was one last thing I had to do...
My flight just landed and I grabbed my suitcase, memories flashing back from five years ago; saying goodbye to my friends, my ex boyfriend, kissing him one last time...
When I saw him I barely recognized him. He was tall, nearly 6 feet, his hair seemed to grow darker and floppier, but his eyes were exactly the same. And so was his smile, except his teeth were metal free and perfectly straight.
Now, I know that I'm 18 years old and nearly an adult, but I couldn't help myself. I ran towards him, arms outstretched. He held out his arms and embraced me smiled. I grabbed him around the waist and squeezed him. He hugged back, lifting me off of my feet. When he let go of me I looked up into his face up close. He still had the same tiny dimples and the same smile and eyes. He was the same, but different.
Well, so was I though. I grew taller, my brown hair is longer, I developed. I'm a woman now. Last time he saw me, I wasn't even fourteen. He looked me up and down, smiling.
"You are so grown up now." he said. My eyebrows shot up. His voice was so deep now and I wonder how he was in his high school.
I laughed. "I could say the same about you, too!" He laughed. I missed his laugh...
We left the airport where we said goodbye so many years ago. Jacob and I promised each other that before we went our separate ways forever, that we had to say goodbye one last time.
"So, where are we going?" I asked him as he got behind the wheel of his car. He smirked.
"You'll just have to find out." he said starting the car. I smiled, rolling my eyes.
We drove down the road that I knew as my old town, and past my old middle school. I remembered the time Jacob kissed me and I missed those old times. Then Jacob parked. I looked where we were and almost cried. It was the ice cream parlor he took me to when he asked me to the dance that started our amazing relationship.
When we entered the shop, the same bell tingled that did years ago. Then an old lady came out of the back room. I recognized her as the woman who served us five years ago.
"Hello, how may I help--" she started off saying, then her eyes widened and her jaw dropped. "Jacob!" she said coming out from behind the counter. Then she turned to me. "And Alice! I thought you left state!"
I smiled. "I came back one last time." I said smiling. Vicky looked overwhelmingly happy.
"I'll get you two some cones." she said going back behind the counter. "Cookie dough, right? And the cones are on the house!"
"Thanks Vicky." Jacob said. Then we went and sat in the booth we did the first time I was hear. We talked and ate our ice cream when it came.
"So, what are you majoring in college?" I asked him. He swallowed and smiled.
"Visual and Performing Arts." Jacob said.
"So you are becoming an actor after all?" I asked smiling. He shrugged.
"What about you?" Jacob asked.
"Journalism. I really got into writing in high school." I said licking my ice cream cone
"I wish I could have been there with you." Jacob said quietly. I sighed.
"I wish that too." I said. "But I'm glad that we have this time to catch up."
"Me too," Jacob said smiling, taking my right hand. I squeezed his hand and he squeezed back.
"Hey, remember how we met?" I asked him smiling. He laughed.
"Ya, I almost ran over you with my bike!" he said. I laughed until my stomach hurt.
"I'm so glad that happened." I said honestly. He smiled.
"Why? You're glad that I almost ran you over?" he asked grinning. I shook my head.
"I'm glad because if you hadn't done that, then I might not have met you." I said smiling. He nodded.
"I miss those days," he said with a sigh. "I'd do anything to just relive it all right now."
"I know," I said thinking back to our memories together; our first sleepover, our first day of school together, our first kiss...
There were so many firsts that I have done with him.
And this was going to be our last.
After an hour of talking, I got up and so did Jacob.
"I have to go," I said sadly. He frowned.
"Why? Can't you just stay a little longer?" he asked pleadingly. I sighed.
"No, my flight is tomorrow morning back to New York and I have someone picking me up soon to take me to my hotel." I said. It felt weird saying all of these adult things to Jacob. It feels like when I'm with him I'm still a child. He nodded his head.
"So this is it then." he said looking me in the eye. "I might never see you again. Ever."
I nodded, trying to keep my composure. "That's right." Jacob took a few steps towards me so that he was only an inch away from me.
"I have a question," he murmured. I stood still, looking into his eyes. "How come you've always been so brave, even in the hardest of times?"
I smiled a bit. "Because I know that the times are going to get better. And I'm not brave."
He cupped my cheek. "To me you are. You've always been." He grabbed my other cheek and kissed my forehead. I closed my eyes, standing there as his lips lay upon me one last time.
When he stepped back a foot from me, I heard a car horn from outside. I looked and saw that it was my ride. That was my cue to leave. Jacob must've known too, because his face turned cold. I grabbed his right hand and he looked back at me.
"I'll never forget you, Jacob." I said smiling. He smiled back. "I will always love the boy who almost ran me over with his bike."
He laughed. "I will never forget you, Alice. And I will always love the girl who was always brave, even in the worst of situations."
I took a few steps back, holding Jacob's hand still until the very last possible moment. Then when it was only our fingertips touching, I took another step back and took one last look at him, his brown floppy hair, his bronze skin, his beautiful smile, and his amazing brown eyes. Then I turned away from him.
That was the last moment I had for the rest of my life with Jacob Sartorius.
