The rain had finally stopped, leaving the countryside washed clean beneath a pale morning sky. From the bedroom window, I could see the fields stretching beyond the property, dark green and heavy with moisture, the distant trees swaying gently in the wind.
I sat at the kitchen island with my laptop open in front of me, scrolling through the latest reports Richard's downfall had generated. Lawsuits. Frozen accounts. Board investigations. Former allies suddenly pretending they had never known him. Every day there was something new.
And yet something bothered me.
Richard still wasn't fighting back. Not really. I know I whacked him pretty good but he made no serious attempts. He was angry, humiliated and desperate, but he wasn't making the moves I expected from him.
That was what worried me.
A cornered animal didn't become less dangerous because it was wounded. Sometimes it became more dangerous because it had nothing left to lose. I closed one document and opened another.
A transfer request.
I frowned.
The account wasn't in Richard's name. It belonged to one of the holding companies I'd spent weeks tracing, a company I'd deliberately left untouched because I knew Richard would eventually try to move something through it.
Except he hadn't. Someone else had attempted to access it. I leaned back in my chair, studying the information again.
"Interesting."
I tapped my finger against the table. There were only two possibilities. Someone was trying to help Richard, or Richard had finally realized that his obvious moves were being watched and was changing his strategy. But regardless, I knew he would come running here so the ball was still in my court.
Neither option appealed to me. I heard footsteps behind me. I didn't turn immediately.
"You've been staring at that screen for ten minutes," Dominik said.
"I know."
He walked around the island and glanced at the laptop. He was dressed casually, dark trousers and a fitted black shirt, his sleeves pushed to his forearms. He had the irritating ability to look completely composed no matter what was happening around him. I turned the laptop slightly toward him.
"Something changed." I said returning my eyes to the screen.
