The rain had stopped sometime during the night, but the city was still slick with it when I arrived at the office just after eight. The streets below were already filling with traffic, people rushing toward meetings, restaurants preparing for lunch and the usual daily chaos beginning to take over.
There was something useful about those early hours. People were less careful when they were tired, more willing to answer a question without considering why it had been asked. Information moved differently in the morning. Quietly. Between people who didn't realize how much they were giving away.
I stepped into my office, placed my keys on the desk and removed my jacket. The room was exactly as I had left it the night before, except for the folder sitting in the center of my desk.
I hadn't left it there.
I stopped. For a moment, I simply looked at iThen I walked over and opened it.
Richard Dawson.
His name appeared on the first page, followed by several documents I'd collected over the last few days. Bank transfers. Company records. Names of former associates. Private accounts that were suddenly becoming very important now that Richard had lost access to most of his money.
I had spent years knowing Richard. Long enough to know that when he was comfortable, he was arrogant. When he was powerful, he was careless. And when he was frightened, he became dangerous.
Right now, he was all three. I turned another page. One of the names caught my attention.
I leaned back slightly. There it was.
The connection I'd been looking for. Mark Kennedy, one of my silent investors. I closed the folder and reached for my phone. There was one message waiting for me.
He's trying to move the money.
I stared at the screen for a moment before replying.
Let him.
The response came almost immediately.
Are you sure?
Yes.
I put the phone down. Richard needed to believe he was still capable of making moves. If we blocked every door, he'd start looking for who was standing behind them. I didn't want Richard looking at me. I wanted him looking for an escape.
