Moving Parts

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I withdrew it immediately. I glanced at the screen and it was one of my contacts. I opened the message expecting another update about Richard's finances, but the first line made me sit straighter:

Richard has been making inquiries outside his usual network.

I read the rest.

He had been contacting people he had never previously used for business. Private investigators. Former associates. Someone connected to an old legal firm. Nothing unusual individually, but together it suggested he was looking for something specific rather than simply trying to rebuild his finances.

I typed back immediately.

What is he looking for?

The response came less than a minute later.

Not sure yet. But he asked about someone.

I stared at the message.

Who?

The typing indicator appeared. Then disappeared. Then appeared again.

Finally, the answer came through.

Jude Bellingham.

For several seconds, I didn't move. I reread the name.

Jude.

My first instinct was to dismiss it as another attempt by Richard to get inside my head. He knew Jude mattered to me. He knew exactly how much history existed between us. If Richard wanted to find a weakness, Jude would be an obvious place to look.

But Richard didn't usually waste time on obvious things.

I closed the message and opened another file, pulling up everything I had on Richard's recent activity. The inquiries weren't connected to his usual financial problems. They weren't about his companies or his lawyers or the people trying to sue him.

They were personal. That bothered me.
I was still staring at the screen when I heard footsteps behind me.

"You look like you're about to murder someone."

I glanced over my shoulder.

Dominik walked into the living room, already dressed for the day. He had his sleeves rolled to his forearms, and his hair was still slightly damp, as though he'd just showered. He walked straight toward the coffee machine, completely unaware, that I'd been sitting there trying to understand why Richard had suddenly become interested in Jude.

"Maybe I am."

He looked over at me while pouring his coffee.

"Who?"

"Who do you think?"

"What happened?"

I turned my phone toward him.

"He's asking about Jude."
