Opal's POV
"Wait Rose," I looked around, wondering where Mason went.
"Mason?" I called out into the empty, dark hallway.
I was met with silence.
My heart began to accelerate, "Mason!" I called out louder than before. Again, silence reached my ears.
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "where'd he go?" I whispered to myself.
"Rose," I called back to her, pressing my ear against the wall again, "I'm going to look for Mason, wait for me here."
I waited to hear her response.
After a moment, I heard her voice, "okay, I'll wait here."
I pulled off one of my hair ties and marked the place where Rose was so I could find her again when I came back.
I backed away from the wall, staring at it for several seconds before turning away and looking down both sides of the hallway, debating which side I should start looking.
Looking to the right, I shook my head. We came from there avoiding a sound we heard. Why would he go back?
I looked to the left and made my decision as I began walking that way.
"Mason?" I whispered. Where could he have gone?
Cautiously holding onto the wall, I made sure to look everywhere. Partly for Mason and partly for any traps that could've been set up.
"Mason, if you're hiding, this isn't funny," my voice shook with the fear that someone could be lurking in the shadows.
I paused at that thought. What if Mr. Knobb was the one waiting in the shadows? What if he was waiting for me to pass by so he can grab me and kill me?
These thoughts had me retreating a few steps. I didn't want him to kill me. The thought had my heart racing.
I nibbled on my lip as I thought. What should I do?
On top of the fear, I began to feel frustrated. It was dark, and there were traps set up, and who knew where they were placed?
I let go of a shaky sigh and gulped, trying to breathe in calmly. If I was going to look for Mason, I had to be calm.
Just as I was about to walk away, I heard a sort of drilling noise coming from the wall next to me.
I slowly walked over to the wall and the drilling got louder.
I paused when I reached the wall and pressed my ear to it.
The wall suddenly opened and I gasped as I stumbled in, to the floor.
The drilling didn't stop though.
When I looked up towards the sound, a loud gasp escaped my lips and I covered my mouth when I saw the scene in front of me.
Mason was bound to a long metal table, unconscious. Standing next to him was Mr. Knobb. He was holding a drill and observing it.
I backed away as far as I could and jumped when my back touched the wall.
When my eyes landed on the wall across from me, I wanted to throw up. So many weapons and tools lined the wall and I knew they were all for torturing.
Tremors shook my body and my heart was beating out of my chest. I wondered briefly what he was going to do to Mason, but I knew it was obvious.
My eyes snapped over to Mason when I noticed his eyes fluttering open and looking around. I watched as his eyes landed on Mr. Knobb and they widened. He began to tug on the chains keeping him bound and I wanted to yell at him to stop, but the words were caught in my throat.
