Jasons' POV
"I have to find a way out of here," I whispered to Natalie.
"What?" She gasped, "no, you could die out there," she shook her head.
"Yes, but we could both die staying in this house. Who knows how long we'll be stuck here. Sooner or later we'll be discovered and we'll die," I tried to reason with her. It was true, we would be found if we stayed in this small closet.
"But I don't want to die yet," her eyes watered.
"You won't," I held her shoulders, "you're not going with me. You'll stay here while I find a way out." I began looking around the closet, looking for anything that could work as a weapon.
"No!" She whirled me back around to face her, "you're not going alone," she said firmly.
"Yes I am, you need to stay here where it's safe," I motioned around the closet, "but I need find a way to get us out of here."
I moved clothes out of the way and pushed them into one corner, searching for some sort of pointed object.
"But you won't be safe though. What if you die? How am I supposed to know?" She asked, desperation entering her voice causing it to sound shaky.
"I'll be fine," I tried to comfort her, at the same time getting on my knees to look behind me.
"No you won't, I don't want you to die," she sounded like she was fighting back tears.
At that precise moment, my hand wrapped around a wired hanger and I pulled it out from the article of clothing it was under.
I turned towards Natalie and pulled her into a hug, "I'll be okay Natalie," I rubbed her back with the hand that wasn't holding the hanger.
"You could die. How will I know if you died? Will I be stuck here forever? I'm too scared to get out," her voice cracked. I pulled back so I was looking at her in the eyes.
I spoke in a firm voice, "I'm going out there. I will make an escape for you and me to get out, and I'll come back for you," I tried to convince her.
"Promise?" She whispered, her small body shaking in fear.
"I promise," I leaned down and kissed her forehead.
Getting up from my spot in this small closet, I opened the door slowly.
"Wait," Natalie pulled me back and gave me a hug, "please come back," she whispered.
"I will," I whispered back as I hugged her.
After a few moments, she let go of me and nodded her head, wiping her eyes and sniffling.
"Okay," she looked up at me and gave me a small smile, "you got this."
I smiled down at her and nodded. Turning on my heel and gripping the wired hanger tightly in my hand, I reached the bedroom door and paused.
"Thank you Natalie," I whispered without turning around and at that moment, I unlocked the door and pulled it open, locking the door back up and closing it behind me. I knew if I stayed in that room for a minute longer, I wouldn't have come out here.
Yet I knew that I had to find a way out. I couldn't stay locked in there doing nothing if I had the possibility to find an escape.
I had to do this for the both of us.
With that thought in mind, I turned left and walked down the hall with determination. I would find a way to escape.
As I reached the staircase, I slowed down knowing what was at the bottom of it, or rather who.
